There is only one perfect edition. It is 3.5

(I admit I haven't read a 5E book so maybe it is fine.)
Yeah 3.5 is epic though Pathfinder is just like 3.5 but with many improvements I would recommend checking that out. Also 5e is amazing as well. 3.5 and pathfinder allow more character customization due to feats etc whereas 5e is a lot simpler but still captures the feel of D&D. Essentially 5e is great for new players or even experienced players who want convenience. One benefit of 5e is that it makes roleplay very prominent as you don’t have nearly as many rules.
