Blog Warden's Other Paint Log

Been stuck in doors the last few days due to the hurricane, and yesterday I used up the remainder of my ashigaru sprues and cast a bunch more bodies to use up all the bits!

Made a bunch more spearmen, bowmen, and arquebusiers. Doing a quick check I currently have 11 blocks of infantry assembled and painted previously (11 blocks of 4 models each). Yesterday I assembled enough models to make another 17 blocks of infantry! :woot:

Primed them all last night and this morning, and just started painting the first group of 10 Ishida Clan arquebusiers.

Here is some of the clan heraldry that I am currently working with. These aren't 100% historically accurate but they are my best guess based on the research I have attempted.

Western Army:

Eastern Army:

Eastern Army 000.jpg

Eventually the goal is to use transfers for some of the more complicated ones like the Tokugawa clan.

Painted up three more squares of Ukita ashigaru, including eight individuals with magnetized bases today!

Also painted up a small pirate goblin that I have had in my "to do" pile for ages, but he doesn't get to be posted until ORKTOBER officially starts in my time zone!:D:bored:

Orctober is upon us (Orktober?) and it inspired me to paint up these two yesterday:

There little wooden platform is magnetized to the bases!:

With one of my savage orcs:

Hope you like them!

Did more work on my samurai army collection, starting with the Bandits and Brigands set from Warlord Games/Test of Honour!

warden201811_bandits and brigands 1.jpg

I didn't experiment with the color scheme this time, kept them in line with the box art. A bit more work to do on these guys before they are done.

Also have another huge box of plastics to get through!

And basecoated my two samurai commanders up, both metal models:

Botany Bay. Hmmm.... Botany Bay.... BOTANY BAY!!! OH NO!!!!

;)

Experimenting with skin tones for these guys.

warden201812_native caribbeans WIP 2.jpg

African on the left, Carib on the right. Needs drybrush/highlighting.

Also thinking to put sand down on the bases, as much as the beautiful wood planks are nice, they don't fit in with these guys too well.

Skin tones are hard best of luck highlighting it :)

So its been a minute before posting here... still working on samurai and jungle natives, but I have been sidetracked by a few new projects! Aside from catan and making a galaxy space board for Star Wars Attack wing, I have been assembling and casting bits for some Necromunda and Adeptus Mechanicus projects!

Got a ton of casting done with my brother:

Necromunda bases!

Huge amount of output done on Christmas eve:

More pictures of assembled projects later, but here is one of the first ones. Using Maelstrom's Edge Broken Infantry bits, plus some old GW bits I have assembled three Beast mutants as the first of my alien scum!

Also assembled bases for the star wars fighters my brother cast up, shown here just prior to magnetization:

Merry belated Christmas! :cold::joyful:

Those look very clean and smooth, what kind of casting did you guys do?

I mostly use Amazing Mold/Resin (found in Hobby Lobby/Michaels/AC Moore arts and crafts stores, or Amazon), while my brother uses Moldmaking starter kits.

The mold making kit I use:

Some old molds:

My brother's kit of choice:

Moldmaking & Casting Pourable Starter Kit.png

Both work well, you can make a lot more using my brother's method though. Just be careful and use gloves when mixing the materials.

Both types have good casting quality, but expect lots of mold lines and air bubbles to fix afterwards. Everything I cast is 100% for my own use, so I don't mind the quality as I can always fix it with clay (my brother is getting good at using green stuff to make fur to fill in gaps). Or if you are looking for a run-down look that work great too.

Most of those spidery legs from the Dunecrawler kit are going to be used in a rather epic project (WIP, but the legs are about to be glued on!!!)

The epic project seems, indeed, epic :D

Can't wait to see how it developes.

Army Size Planning:

When I finally decided on the battle and using square bases, I was very curious to see just how big of an army I could eventually create (given enough time, money, time, painting skill, and time). I decided to do a little powerpoint-wizardry to make paper tiles to mark each unit that I could possibly make to create this army in 28mm.

View attachment 46183

Here are the block sizes I was working with:

Infantry (missile ashigaru, spear ashigaru, foot samurai): 40 x 40 mm; 4x infantry per base
Cavalry (samurai): 50 x 50 mm; 2 mounted samurai per base

Each tile has a picture of the clans I have been researching.
Western Army Clans: coalition of Ishida, Ukita, Konishi, Shimazu, Otani, and others

Western Army Traitors: Kobayakawa and allies (who turned the tide of the fighting in favor of Tokugawa)

Eastern Army: Tokugawa and his generals

Western Army: Rear Forces of the Mori Clan (who in real life never joined the battle)

After everything was cut out, here is what it looked like on the game board!

And here are the generals I am thinking to lead the forces. Not sure if one or two of these were actually present, more research is required!

Just been having a look and like-bomb back at your Samurai work, and I love this idea - I’ve been making some similar tiles for a Celtic force using the numbers of figures supplied by Victrix as a guide.

Wow thanks! The project has been fun but once again is sidetracked. It is more of a long term project anyway. Hoping to play some Test of Honour shortly (really glad I experimented with magnetizing bases!).

Working on assembling and painting my alien scum! No washes are done yet, still finishing up the gaps.

Two purple-headed goons, I love the pose of the one on the left. Probably my favorite alien of the bunch.

Some avian-gecko headed aliens:

One tall alien with a rebreather, an imperial guard deserter, and a fungoid alien with extensive cybernetics:

My brother is also working on casting his yetis!
