Indeed, and it gives the heroes a sense of mortality, which makes it more realistic, compared to the OT where heroes are somehow literally able to run directly into a hail of blaster fire and survive unscathed.
Not always (Leia in Ep6) but yeah, common trope in pretty much all of Star Wars.
 
But they really could have given him a better send off.
I think that if they'd have replaced Holdo with him (at least for the hyperspace jump) it would have been the perfect send off...

...Apart from the fact that in today's political climate, you can't have a character called Ackbar doing a suicide attack. Let's be realistic, you just can't. Not without serious controversy
 
I agree, he was a cool guy despite being a very minor side character.
Fans loved him!

I guess Disney are paying for it now. You can only crap on the fan base so many times.

I had the same idea. I kinda liked the Holdo character but she was another human, and her loss wasn't that sad because we hardly knew her. Having Ackbar - a beloved character by old fans - sacrifice himself would have had more impact.
