Best smartphone between: Samsung Galaxy S8 vs. Google Pixel 2 vs. Google Pixel 2 XL

Assuming all three phones cost the exact same amount (free with phone plan), which would you choose out of the following 3 smartphones (and why)?
  • Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Google Pixel 2
  • Google Pixel 2 XL

Oh man, same question here as I have to get one soon as well.
 
Pixel has unlimited storage so that is a big plus, other than that a phone's a phone
 
The main differences I could find are these:
Samsung has a SD card slot, IP68 instead of IP67, more camera features, can charge wirelessly, has a bigger battery and a screen with a better pixel density as well as a better GPS receiver.
The Pixel has better speakers. It is also made by Google which probably means less additional software that conflicts. Also it doesn't have the damn curved display it seems.

Overall I am trending towards the Samsung I think as I am very happy with the Samsung S7 I have now. The SD card slot is also something I like a lot.
 
It's a really tough choice.


The screen on the Pixel 2 XL is a bit of a worry, they had a bunch of problems with it at launch. Google has fixed most of the issues, but the Samsung screen is still much better. On the other hand, potential lag over time is a worry on the Samsung. The Pixel 2 is apparently a bit faster because it does not have a skin running over the base Android OS and it will be supported with updates for 3 years.

The Samsung has a headphone jack which is nice as well as the advantages that @Aginor highlights, but the Pixel has a better camera according to most of the reviews.

You do not like the beveled glass of the S8? What is wrong with it?
 
I like to put protective stuff on my phones such as those anti scratch foil covers for the display or Otterbox shells.
The curved glass looks cool but it makes that a pain.

Oh and about the camera: if the S8 camera is at least as good as the one in the S7 it is awesome. I am extremely happy with that one. My phone takes far better pictures than most cameras I have ever used.
 
I thought Samsung made 99% of all phone/tv screens, just a general point nothing to do with the phones. :)
 
That's correct, IIRC Samsung is the biggest manufacturer of screens there is. Many TVs that you buy from other manufacturers use Samsung panels, just with other electronics in the box.
 
Turns out I won't be getting any of the phones. :( Back to my old Blackberry Bold.

I am actually thinking of getting the Samsung S9..... but then I read they have some issues with the displays so I'll wait a bit longer and see what happens.

Nothing too dramatic. My wife thought I could get the phone upgrade on my current plan, but it turns out I'd have to upgrade the plan. I don't use my phone all that often so it really isn't worth it at the moment.

Yeah those things are damn expensive.
I am aware that my current plan is.... way too expensive, basically paying for a premium smart phone that I could get any moment now but I don't because I am happy with mine and too lazy to go get a new one...
