My rationale:

To maintain group cohesion I choose characters that are all aligned towards the light/good side.
  • Yoda: auto include. Wisest & strongest. Greater force abilities than any other light side force user. If I only had one single choice, it would be Yoda
  • Baze: between Yoda, Mace and Obi-Wan I have unsurpassed close quarters fighting ability covered. Baze provides long range firepower, I had considered Chewie (but Baze is better equipped) and Jango Fett (his loyalty is questionable), but Baze works best in the team I've assembled.
  • Mace Windu: lightsaber fighter extraordinaire... and a BMF
  • Han Solo: between my three Jedi my team possesses a great deal of wisdom. I needed thinking from a different angle. Street smarts if you will!
  • Medic Droid: as mentioned by @Aginor the droid can not be turned into a zombie and requires no sleep. R2 can fix him if need be.
  • Obi-Wan: Probably the greatest defensive fighter of his time. His mastery over form III Soresu will be invaluable. He is also very loyal, intelligent and level-headed
  • R2-D2: loyalty, proven battlefield survival experience, can fix just about anything. Plus, who doesn't love R2!
  • Jar Jar: do I really need to explain this selection?

Interesting selection, but here's a better one, my Zombie Apocalypse team MK2:
Star Wars Team MK2.jpg

Let me explain:
Obi-Wan: Arguably the most level-headed of all the Jedi (apart from Yoda) and the greatest tactician of all of them. He has to be in my leader slot, 100%.
Baze: I'm pleased that you decided to keep Baze in as the Brawler - he is arguably the most badass character of the franchise (in my eyes at least) and can pour out a storm of firepower with his repeater cannon to support the melee-oriented Jedi, Chirrut and K2. He also has a missile launcher and a close combat stun weapon, meaning he's got plenty of weaponry to deal out the hurt, even if he's attacked in melee himself.
Mace: I agree with you here that Mace is a good contender for weapons expert - he's an excellent duellist and he also knows how to break enemy weapons and exploit vulnerabilities with Shatterpoint.
Yoda: I put Yoda as the brains of the team simply because he's not only the wisest of the Jedi but is also the most experienced at an age of around 900 years old, as well as a strong lightsaber duellist and exceptionally strong with the Force. Han on the other hand is not particularly intelligent or wise (at least not the young version, perhaps the old version from VII), just lucky as hell and good at mechanics. By all accounts he should have died several times as well as Jar Jar.
Medical Droid: As explained above.
Chirrut: He may not be the strongest with the force, but he is certainly one of the fastest combatants alongside Yoda. He is also surprisingly accurate in his strikes as he can sense exactly where enemies are by detecting their force signatures, as his blindness has amplified his other senses (because he was born blind naturally), including this ability (as he sensed Jyn's positive Force signature among the Jedha crowds - even non-Force sensitives have Force signatures). Furthermore, I still maintain that he would be able to strengthen his quarterstaff with the Force, and alongside Baze they are an amazing team. Chirrut would probably stay beside him and protect him from close combat attacks so Baze can keep shooting.
K-2SO: He may not be as endearing as R2, but he's a much better fighter (has his fists and is decent with a blaster) and still has much of his mechanical skill.
Stormtrooper: You forget that Jar Jar is the luckiest character in Star Wars and has avoided infinitely many attempts to kill him that by all odds should have killed him. Stormtroopers on the other hand are expendable cannon-fodder and perfect for the role of Guy who Dies First.

Can you imagine they brought him back for Ep. IX and he was the mastermind behind everything. I would give up on everything Star Wars outside of the OT.

There's no chance of that because J.J. Abrams is an evil original trilogy purist who seems to hate him almost as much as you do. You can see just from watching VII, with the cringeworthy second Trench Run, that J.J. is an original trilogy fanatic.

If I was the emperor of the world, that person would be executed! ;) jk

That is a bit harsh, just because someone else has a different opinion to you. Just saying. o_O

Explaination:
Team Leader: Yoda, for reasons that you guys have already outlined
Brawler: Embo. Probably one of the most skilled and agile fighters in the Star Wars Galaxy - and he doesn't even have the force
Weapons Expert: Pre Vizla. All Mandolorians have ridiculous amounts of gadgets in their armour, and Pre Vizla has shown immense skill in using all of his. Plus, his Darksaber is awesome.
Brains: Thrawn. Arguably the greates strategist in the Star Wars universe, and no slouch in combat either.
Medic: Luminara Unduli. A respected force healer who is also a skilled duelist.
Speed Fighter: Kit Fisto. He is one of the best fighters in the order, and would also provide some much needed levity and moral support
Mascot: Marrok. Who doesn't love dogs? And besides, alongside Embo they become an unstoppable team.
Guy who dies first: EXD-9. The reason he dies first is that after taking out loads of the zombie horde alone, the MASSIVE NUKE inside him explodes

That's a pretty cool team!

Certainly an interesting take on it. I especially like the fact that someone actually chose a Guy who Dies First as a useful Guy who Dies First who contributes to help the team on his death rather than someone who just deserves to die first.

Here's a Star Trek one :vulcan::
Star Trek team.jpg

And my explanation:
Captain Picard: Arguably the best captain when it comes to organising, remaining level-headed and being a tactician. 'Nuff said.
Worf:
Certainly the strongest fighter in both TNG (except Data) and DS9, surely a fearsome brawler indeed.
Garak: Cunning, sneaky and resourceful, Garak is an excellent saboteur, assassin and all-round handy man when it comes to killing enemies. I'll just have to make sure he's not in any confined spaces...
Data: Not just the strongest member of the TNG crew, he also an incredibly intelligent Android and surely the best candidate for all round brains. Furthermore, he won't be infected by Zombie bites as he's an Android.
The Doctor: One of the best Doctors in all of Trek alongside Julian Bashir, he's also a Hologram, so again he won't be infected by Zombie bites.
Q: Although he's pretty lazy, I chose Q as my speed fighter in that he could just zap all the zombies away with a click of his fingers - you can't get any faster than that.
Neelix: Although he's not the most popular Trek character, I just felt Neelix would be great as the mascot because he is pretty amusing, although he makes food almost as bad as Chief O'Brien's combat rations.
Wesley: Just as @NIGHTBRINGER can't stand Jar Jar, I can't stand Wesley, but for a different reason. While Jar Jar is one of the least intelligent characters around, Wesley, despite being a 15-year old kid, is one of the most, and he certainly likes everyone to know it. The reason I dislike Ahsoka is because she reminds me so much of him. Certainly he's the one character who definitely deserves to die horribly.

Our lists are almost identical. The only key differences are K2 vs R2, Chirrut vs Han and the inconsequential choice of who dies first. I think either list works well. Your point on K2 is completely valid, but R2 has proven over the entire series to be incredibly useful and innovative. The little guy always comes through. Besides, with the combat abilities of Yoda, Obi-Wan and Mace, K2's fighting contribution is fairly insignificant. That said, either choice works. As for Chirrut, while he is a good fighter, he is nothing compared to the Jedi in your list already. If you want another combatant, choosing another grandmaster Jedi would be of greater advantage. Han on the other hand offers the group something that the others do not. He is intelligent, just in a different way. He offers a different perspective. Without any force abilities, he constantly finds a way to win. That said, I think your selections are awesome and would make for a great team as well.

That is a bit harsh, just because someone else has a different opinion to you. Just saying. o_O
I was clearly joking. :D

Brains: Thrawn. Arguably the greates strategist in the Star Wars universe, and no slouch in combat either.

That is a great selection. The only worrying aspect is that he is aligned with the bad guys. If we disregard that fact, he is the absolute best choice, MUCH better than anything we selected. Even with his alignment, I'm thinking I want him in my group. Good call. Overall I really love your list and rationale. It has given me a lot to think about.

My list is simple.... Q, Q, Q, Q, Q, Q, Q and Kira.

Rationale:
  • Q: with Q on your side you don't need anyone else. There is nothing that another character can offer that he can't. If Q should turn against you, then no one else on your team can save you. As for choosing him multiple times... he is omnipotent! He is my favorite character on any of the Star Trek series.
  • Kira Nerys: I don't know why, but she just bugs me.

What about admiral Ackbar?
Ackbar is a solid tactician, but Thrawn is many times more superior.

Fair point! In any case, if Zombies were attacking you, you would just need one Q on your side to send all the Zombies to some gods-forsaken corner of space where there is no life!

I agree that Kira is annoying sometimes - she certainly has some moments where I feel like saying “Someone slap her for me!”, especially when she keeps going on about her time as a terrorist as if it was something heroic, when all terrorism, regardless of who commits it, is evil. In fact I generally think the Bajorans aren’t that interesting as a race, the only Bajoran characters I like are Bareil (who is basically murdered by Kai Winn quite early on) and the scientist who found and raised Odo (and he only appeared in one episode). I actually knew someone in the school below my college who was so much like the Mirror Version of Kira - loud-mouthed, selfish and quite creepy sometimes. However, I just think Wesley takes the biscuit for being the one who deserves to die first because he’s just so insufferable - even the actor who portrayed him on the screen hated the character.

Admittedly, Wesley was my second choice for the position! :D The worst character on TNG by far.

Well Star Wars Rebels finally finished in the UK today (although you bloody yanks got the finale weeks before us ). It was an absolutely fantastic end, and for those who haven't seen it yet, I thoroughly recommend giving it a try. It's definitely just as good as the Clone Wars, and that is arguably better than the Prequels!

You are lucky. I still have to wait half a year for the German BluRay release because my wife would kill me of I watched it in english and not together with her...
