Tutorial Magnetizing Terradons / Ripperdactyls Tutorial from @Aginor and @Seraphage

In other news: I noticed that the way I am doing this right now we are going to need eleven or 12 magnets per Terradon/Ripper so I ordered some additional magnets last night.

RIPPERS' CLAWS all the way (for me)!!!

They are a lot more frightening and interesting, and since Seraphon/Lizardmen are badass semi-alien killing machines I believe they fit best this way.

By the way: I've seen online neodimium magnets with the following measures
A) 1 mm diameter and 1 mm height, strenght 31 grams
B) 1.5 mm diameter and 0.5 mm height, strenght 33 grams
C) 2 mm diameter and 1 mm height, strenght 110 grams

Which one would you suggest me to use?
I'd go with option B, but do you think they would be ok to magnetize both troups (Skinks, Saurus) and larger models (Terradons, Stegadons)?
 
I magnetized the first rider today. Well, most of it.

Here you can see the arm parts (no hands for the Terradon versions yet just the arm).

I messed up one of the arms a bit so I will have to put a little bit of liquid green stuff in there to cover up. My most common error is to not put the magnets in deep enough.

For the shield I tried something new.
The shield itself has a regular magnet but for the other side I wanted to avoid having the clunky magnet on there. So I snapped off a tiny part (2mm x 1mm) off the end of a fret saw blade and glued it to the arm. When painted it will be pretty much invisible I guess.
The magnet attaches to it quite well and since the shield is very small there is no risk of it falling off.

Tonight I built the second one, without the rider though.
I found out another trick: if the holes for the paper clip part are too big (it is hard to drill them very accurately) you can fill them a bit with a tiny amount of poster putty. That helps keeping the parts together.

I am still not sure if I can get fully rid of the gaps in the patagiums near the tail but I will try.
Of course everyone should be aware that there will be visible crevices where the parts meet, that's just the price you pay for something convertible, but I will try to find a technique to keep them as small as possible.
 
I agree with you go for the Terradon claws.

I should not by any means take any credit for this incredible tutorial. This is SOLELY your AWESOME work @Aginor !

The idea was yours though, you gave me that nudge to really try it. :)

I will continue working on them soon, right now I am painting my Bastiladon but I am already thinking about how to get those flyers on their flying stands, which isn't quite as trivial as I thought.

EDIT:
Same goes for the pilots. I thought I could magnetize those neck rings but that's pretty much impossible. So I am searching for alternatives.
 
Really cool work here! Thanks for doing this. Magnetizing seems like such a handy skill, I'm learning a lot from this.
 
I just read through this thread and noticed that I really never finished this, so I will post a few pics and notes about the finished conversions soon.

Examples:
- You bought a Stegadon and cannot decide which weapon option (including EotG) you want to build: make it convertible by attaching parts with magnets.
- You cannot decide between the Scar-Veteran weapons, Spear or Blade? Magnetize his weapon arm, so you can have both available
- you usually want Rippers, but sometimes you need Terradons? Do what I did in this thread, no need to buy six of each and let half of them gather dust all the time.
 
Can anyone send me an amazon link to some of these magnets for cheap? Also I have a question that may or may not be related but after I got my Lord Kroak I lost the piece that keeps holds him on his base and now I don’t know what to do.
