The character was massively unsuccessful, which is why his subsequent roles in episodes II and III were so diminished. He obviously didn't get enough support from the intended target audience (children) to keep him in the following movies in any capacity beyond a cameo. So either he didn't hit the mark with his intended audience or the intended audience was too small of a subsection of the movies real audience (most of whom were massively annoyed by him). I'd like to think it was a combination of both the factors I outlined above.

Points can be argued back and forth, but history is the ultimate tie breaker... and Jar Jar came out on the losing end of it.

I see his thoughts being along the lines of: "How do I escape this AoS world?". Perhaps that is more of my thinking though.
