Hey guys!

I know the Razordon vs Salamander is an old subject of debate, both being really good at what they do, but I feel like we need to stir up the conversation since the new meta just might shift in favor of hordes and melee armies.

I believe that Sallies were used for big multi wounds models and Razordons were more of a multimodel unit killers. Considering the shift in the meta we're about to experience (probably), I would say that the Razordons now edge the Sallies by a great margin.

What do you guys think?

Well.... I don't know. I always was more on the Razordon side, because of more attacks and the fact that they may make opponents hesitant to charge. Salamanders cause mortal wounds though...

Razordons for me. They look better. And with rend and many attacks they are the better horde killers. For 320 points you get 16d6 attacks.
I just wish they weren't so damn expensive. Would love to run eight of them in a game.

This, how is a box of 6 gryph-hounds only £15 and one salamander with 3 skinks £18.50?

I actually think Gryph Hounds are cheaper to produce.

Edit: but so are Gore-Gruntas, and those are NOT cheap. :D

Ah you're probably right, but lets face it, they'd still probably not cost that much to produce.

But what did they change about the salamanders and razordons?

As of the General's Handbook 2017, the only change is in points to both these models, which is 60pts to 40pts. What I think needs adressing is the fact that the meta is changing towards large, horde armies, which I think benefits more the Razordons.

My answer Is simple :
-salamanders in gh16 because meta was low Number of model with good saves
- razodont at moment , o we can t know meta because we played not many game with new book! But i think this Is hords meta.gh17 changes make me think that!!

We've got Stegadon with Sunfire Throwers, Kroxigor with Maces, and hordes of Saurus and Skinks to deal with hordes. I'm not too worried about that. Salamanders are the cheapest model we have for taking down large, heavily armed targets.

Of course I'm also old school from before razordons and hate the new sally/razor models so haven't bought any since 2000 I believe? So I could be biased.

You don't like the Razordon models? I'm thinking they look great painted up right. All the spikey-things like a porcupine dinosaur. Super threatening!

I suppose. I like the straight up dinosaur look better. Maybe a smaller version of the ankylodon (I mean Bastiladon).

I guess to restate my post from above you need to consider all the elements of your army and see which you need more -- lots of small, horde clearing shooting or a few hard hitting, high rend shots to take down behemoths and defensive juggernauts.

I feel that Seraphon generally does very well against Horde armies by having lots of options to deal with them (almost as if we were designed to fight Skaven and Demons! Shocker!) whereas we can struggle against harder targets.

Biggest problem of salamanders ain't even the huge dollar cost but the appearance.. like.. holy moly. I am not comparing it with the newest model. Just put it alone somewhere and look at it. How could they approve something that ugly ? This is so NOT gw imo. If I could pick a new release or remake of salamnders i d go for remake anytime. New awesome models can wait. We need to get rid of those things

But the advantage of Salamanders is that you can get pretty cool Dimetrodon models for cheap to use as a substitute. For Razordons there aren't any good ones that look similar. :(

Please link to check it out ?? :D

Something like this (although that exact one is a bit too big I guess):
https://www.amazon.com/Schleich-North-America-Dimetrodon-Figure/dp/B016PY14ZE

The older Salamander models heavily borrowed from the Dimetrodon's shape and since a Dimetrodon is a well-known and very recognizable Dinosaur (actually not really a Dinosaur but that's not the topic here) it is pretty popular as a toy in all scales.
Just search for dimetrodon toy and you get lots of stuff. Some of them are around the size of a GW Salamander, which is ~7cm long I think.

It's like 70% but could you show us a photo next to our army ?? :)

Sorry the only Salamander I have is the official GW one. I just found that pic when I was searching for alternatives.
It is a bit bigger than the GW ones. I'd say almost double the size so not usable. But there are smaller Dimetrodon models, I found some when I last searched for them in January or so, when I noticed I'd like to play more Sallies or Razordons but realized how damn expensive they are.
