And here the popular rumoured idea was that Darth Plagius was responsible. So much for that.
One of the low points of Star Wars history. Just bad. I even cringed in the cinema. Although I did enjoy the rest of the movie.
The Darth Plagueis theory makes it a bit better at least.

I introduced my wife to Star Wars, she did not enjoy the prequels but had to see how they finished. It was a labor of love, and we were both happy when the prequels were over.

Pretty graphics, Darth Maul and some of the characters were cool, but overall... :argh:

I enjoyed Rogue One though. Mostly because of Donnie Yen.

Well I'm sure I found a theory that Anakin was created by the Force, conceived by Midichlorians, in retaliation to the dark experiments Plagueis carried out in saving people from dying, so in a way he is responsible.

I still think Snoke is (or at least should be) Darth Plagueis...

As in somehow he was able to resurrect himself after being killed by his apprentice (Sidious)? I'd find that intriguing. :)

I have heard a version of this theory.
Theoretically Plagueis was able to achieve immortality not by keeping his body alive, but by transfering his counscious into younger bodies down the centuries. He trained Sidious as an apprentice, and when he perceived his own power was finally weaker than his subordinate, used his powers to switch bodies. Then Plagueis-in-Sidious' body killed a surprised and weakened Sidious-in-Plagueis body.

Anakin was very powerful, and Plagueis selected him for his next body replacement. When Anakin made the transfer to Vader (due to a liberal application of lightsaber wounds due to Obi-Wan), Plagueis realized he no longer had a replacement because Anakin's body was a wreaked shell, that would offer no long-term gains. This changed when Luke came along, but we know how that went with Plagueis-in-Sidious/Palpatine's body falling down the bottom of the death star...

BUT somehow Plagueis's concious survived, maybe he transferred it to another body somehow? Maybe he didn't die at the base of the death star (i mean, look at Darth Maul, he didn't die after a huge fall and he was cut in half!) and was able to survive in a new body, now controlling the "First Order" under the guise of "Supreme Leader Snoke." But in reality he is Plagueis all along.

And now, Plagueis/Snoke intends to transfer his conscious into a new body, that of Kylo Ren, and continue the cycle? Maybe by taking that girl jedi's body at some point? Or maybe he has been lusting after Skywalker for so long, maybe that is why he was searching for him all this time? The body he was promised but never achieved?

This is all just a big conspiracy theory of course.

An entertaining theory!

Exactly! I believe it would be highly original if Sidious thought he had killed Plagueis but in fact Plagueis had resurrected himself without his apprentice finding out, leaving the joke on Sidious after he thought it amusing that Plagueis could save others but not himself. Plagueis could have believed his apprentice had struck out at the Jedi too soon, and attempted to lead the First Order to triumph where Darth Sidious' Sith Empire ultimately failed, masquerading as a mysterious Supreme Leader hardly anyone knows about. Believing Sidious to have had too much trust, a light side quality, in Anakin, his last apprentice, Snoke then acted to train Kylo Ren to be the embodiment of the Dark Side, having none of the Light Side of the Force in him, because Sith like Sidious, Maul, Tyranus and Vader all still had part of the Light Side in them. Sidious had a desire to enforce order, albeit tyrannical order, Maul cared for his long-lost brother Savage, Tyranus wanted to lead the Separatists in a movement he believed would be better for the galaxy as a whole than the 'corrupt' Republic and Vader ultimately wanted safety for his family and friends, as love both turned him to the Dark Side (his love for Padme as his wife) and brought him back to the Light (his love for Luke as his son). Kylo Ren aspires to have none of these qualities and be purely evil, so I believe Plagueis would be trying to make something even more evil than a Sith like himself to help the Dark Side on its way to ruling the Galaxy entirely.

Although, knowing Disney and their desire to simply remake the originals, Snoke will probably just be a remake of Palpatine :(
