I know a month isn't long and I know I still have loads to learn but one thing that I have noticed is we are reliant on battalions without them we are at a disadvantage compared to the armies I have played.

Every game I've played has resulted in me thinking, if I had Shadowstrike or If I had Eternal I would have been able to do this and do that more so than my opponent.

What's your experience playing without battalions?

I quit playing without because i kept getting my ass handed to me. Battalions give you fewer drops which gives you a better chance of going first and they also unlock great synergies. My current go tos are the eternal and shadow strike, but I've also used the bloodclaw with much sucess.

But having first turn isn't always the best thing as if you have the skink star seer you can get a double turn unless they are a all out shooting army then go first

going first is always a good idea if you are trying to snipe a character. I for one don't want foot of gork going off of some aplha striking motal wound dealing bullshit happening before I have a chance to neutralize that threat.

Yeah it depends on what army your versing

The meta around here is to dole out as many mortal wounds as possible first go. Tons of stormcast and stormfiend filled skaven armies locally. I've got better things to do than have my 260 point scar vet on carnesaur lose all his wounds before he gets a chance to get stuck in. I go for the throat on any mortal wound dealing character before they can go and giggle maniacly while i do it.

Shadow snipe on a Hero first turn or a mortal wound threat is the only reason I would go first given the choice that is.

That's the feeling I'm getting already, I think we have to to stand a chance.

Our battailons are expensive but IMO totally worth it. Take two if possible, one of them being a Shadowstrike.
The other can be a Firelance, a Thunderquake or an Eternal one for example. All three viable options IMO.
Bonus: One artefact more for one of your heros.

I think if I had Shadowstrike last night I would have won easily, so defo being built in from now on.

If going all seraphon I will take Batallions. If mixed order, I usually do, but occasionally it's unnecessary. Pure Seraphon need those extra boosts to play with the synergies, as they aren't strong enough due to power creep.

Well, the only really cheese list around here is a Slyvaneth one who is currently 100% for wins in the escalation league. Everyone else seems reasonably balanced and not too cheesy... So battalions haven't really been super critical for me. My win ratio isn't super good either though, so maybe I should!

I've built the fyreslayes/collegiate list completely to blow up Sylvaneth :P

Battalions may be truly helpful, but it depends from a lot of things.

As said, meta. Not all the armies need to be glasscannoned by a shadowstrike starhost, and sometime it's better to field a traditional army and use those saved points to have (another) unit of chama skinks.

Battalions are not on the same level. some abilities are truly powerful (all my heroes use their command abilities? yes, please!), while some others are kinda meh (sunclaw starhost).

This is true but a 1000 point game Shadowstrike is powerful but costly , do I want to spend 600 points to take out a Lord Celestant on Dracoth or would a 260 point Scarvet on Carny be better?
