Blog The Jade Host: Mayan Lizardmen

Red Saurus are complete.

They are much tighter on the base now, didn't realize how much the paint would do that. But they turned out great, first Lizardmen regiment that I have completely based!

One saurus unit down, 3 to go!

Also a shot of the completed saurus unit fillers:

The tower is a bit large, so I may make a new one to replace it and relegate this one to scenery.

Other ideas I had for saurus unit fillers (ideas from the Lustrian campaign book):

- Carniverous plants
- Curse Marker (some skulls mounted on sticks)
- Native traps (like a bear trap, but made by lizardmen)
- Quicksand
- Another one that looks like a pile of lizardmen treasure
- Jungle Swarm on a larger base?

They look great all based and ready to go. A lot of unit fillers I have seen were mostly jungle plants. The totems look great, but you could put a supply cart with a Skink clerk handing out weapons and shields. Tied up or caged captives if you have a few other models from other armies. Or even just a cage for the eventuality of capturing treasure hunters.

There was a suspicious package placed on my doorstep today... but it turned out to be my prize for tying for 3rd place in the Golden Serpent contest last year!

Thank you @The Red Devil for putting on such a fantastic competition!

AWESOME!! And very well deserved!

Thank you @The Red Devil for putting on such a fantastic competition!

Indeed! We're all grateful for all the time and effort that was put forth by @The Red Devil and the many others who contributed.

Work has commenced on basing my next two units of saurus warriors (the two with spears). Here is the pre-shot to show you what I am working with.

To fill in the gaps I created two more unit fillers, both based on ideas from the Lustrian Campaign book.
Lots of great ideas here. I decided to go with the "curse marker" with the severed heads option, along with the "native traps."

Very simple to do, with extra pieces I had lying around, plus a few cast skulls and a cast orc head (the white resin pieces)

Curse Marker, complete with skulls and shrunken heads:

"native" trap, made from a Lizardman medallion and two extra saurus weapons:

Those markers are superb. Would be great objective markers or even condition markers.

Exactly what I was thinking they could double as in some games, that is why I eventually hope to make several more of them.

More updates: bases have been sanded and painted brown.

Did an experiment based on the way the trap was painted in the book, really tried to make the metal look "bronzed" with a blue-green wash that I have never attempted before. Looks successful!

And started painting the skulls. The ork is missing most of his teeth, but that's fine because its head is on a stick anyway. Makes the teeth look rotted out.

You can see the Wood Elf head on the back of this one now:

Yes they normally come in a set of 10.

I was originally thinking a dwarf pirate force consisting of a unit of Long Drong Slayers, some piratey thunderers and warriors, and a unit of counts-as miners that look like deep sea divers from a jules verne book. Also would have added a unit of regular slayers to be dressed up like islander cannibals, and of course cannons. Lots of pirate cannons. Maybe a gyrocopter dressed up to look like a pirate lifeboat.

I never really developed the chaos dwarf pirate angle, but I figured they would have deal with the slave trade to Lustria, and be supplemented by some orc slave regiments and some Lustrian ogres. Lots of big beards and big hats. I was partially inspired by these chaos dwarfs:

I can't find the original link, but here is a link to the guy who made them, Tjub from Chaos Dwarfs Online.

Also for bases I wanted to use a similar concept by wonkobaggins at DakkaDakka; have a bunch of dwarfs coming up along the beach, with palm trees and barrels lining the coastline.

Lots of good stuff here. So many projects still to do!

These are truly amazing !

New set of pictures for the next part of the process- adding more color to the brown bases. All that is left at this point is adding jungle leaves (which is done) I just need to upload those pictures.

Really nice unitfillers/markers... looking good with those plants added... have the say that I thought the one with the trap was a little empty... but now I think it's the one I like best! ;)

By the way... healthy thing to use the burger king vouchers the way you do... don't know if I could do it without taking one or two to the restaurant...;)

Both the black and yellow saurus are now completely based.

Added a small medallion to the base of this one. Back when I first made this unit, this model was a test model, so he is painted slightly differently from all the others (black painted scales, while the rest are actually just a black wash).

Standard bearer also has a clay snake on his base. I may start adding more of these on future unit bases.

Got three units of saurus complete now; only one last unit of saurus infantry and the temple guard to do before moving on to the rest of the army.

Looks really good! You unitfillers are really amazing and inspiring...
Will have to start making some mini terrain pieces, too. ;)
