7th Ed. Why did the old ones make the strongest casters frogs?

So anyone got any ideas of why the old ones made the strongest wizards fat frogs or any other weird questions about lizard mem.
 
So they could hold more delicious magical power?
 
Note that Slanns did not used to be fat frogs, here is a really old (80's) model of a Slann:



I am not sure of the exact evolution, maybe they used to look like that and evolved to be the current models due to a lesser need to walk and fight with the extreme magic. Or maybe it was just GW changing the design and had nothing to do with story.

As creatures that sit steady and meditate for up to hundreds of years, and never touch the ground thus don't walk, they are going to get a touch fat. :P I guess GW's best representation idea for that theme could have been frogs given the lizard feel for the army. Or probably closer to toads really.
 
Well, while we're on the subject, you'd think if the Old Ones where so advanced, why didn't they invent a race that could pilot a giant mecha-titan that could just walk right over all the other empires... We may never know the will of the old ones... (but yeah, Strewart's explanation seems pretty spot on. Plus it's a bit wrong for a level 4 wizard to be built like a pro-wrestler with a sword). I'm suprised to see a fluff thread on here, I was starting to think all you guys ever talked about was rules.
 
Well, the Old Ones weren't advanced enough to not get their arses handed to them by Chaos.
As for the question 'Why are Slaan frogs?', the same could be asked about almost every single army. 'Why are Empire/Brets humans?', 'Why are Dwarves short?', 'Why do BoC have horns?', 'What's icing mad of?', and so on.
 
i think its to contrast them from the "lizards"

+ i think the old ones did give them super advanced tech e.g/. the engine of the gods, hand of the gods etc.
they are reveared as magic relics but are actually long forgotten bits of science. or at least thats what i gather from the fluff

also i like to think of the lizardmen more like Atlantians rather than the stereotypical "Inca, Mayan or Aztec" theme.
 
slanns wasn't created by the old ones. They were favoured slaves on the old ones ships.

They already possessed a huge amount of power and ability to control magic(just like the old ones)
 
Actually the slann where Created by the old ones, I quote:

They created as they had elsewhere, servants to tend their needs. The First spawning of the slann mage-priests came into being.

They may just resemble frogs, internally their biology must be much different from anything we are familiar with today - I mean it's not like we see powerful toads invading New York from the amazon with their awesome magical POWA. As for why frogs - I think it's to fit in with the Scaly/slimey/lizard look.
 
Was it only me that didnt think the old ones were fighting Chaos? The battles against Chaos didnt seem to start until after the warp gate collapsed.

I think it is going to be a tie in with 40k, either the gats are tied into the eldar webway and the eldar letting slaneesh in screwed them or I personally think it was the Ctan from the Necron codex as they mention a bunch of times a great war against the old ones.

Also there are a lot of eldar ties to Chaos attacks and they are protcecting the webways. I think eldar are also an old ones creation or at least a culture nurtured towards a particular goal. I really need to get the eldar codex to read.
 
Yeah, the Eldar where definatly a creation of the Old Ones. I don't remember where I read this, but they and the Orks were made to fight the C'tan (I guess they're always making new primitive armies to fight super advanced ones :shifty:). The Eldar started out as primitive but they could compete because they had awsome psychic powers, which was the C'tans greatest weakness. Also their emotions created Gods in the Warp that helped too (Khaine, Vaul, etc. This was pre-pantheon). Then the war created the enslavers (chaos as we know it. Since the Old Ones had no emotions the Warp was pretty calm before this point) which broke into the materium via the Eldar psykers and forced the C'tan into hiding, and by that time the Old Ones where beaten into obscurity. I'm not sure 40k really does tie in though, since if the fantasy Orcs where the same ones as the 40k Orks, they would be able to construct things like machine guns and moter vehicles based on instinct. But the fact that he Old One's had an intergalactic empire in both does make for a compelling argument. But then there's the fact that the Elves have the same gods as the Eldar, but they don't seem to have anything else in common, exept a few other parallels that seem to be coincidence. I do kind of like the idea that Sigmar was one of the Lost primarchs :D. But then again, the Emperor did discover all of the Primarchs... And didn't Sigmar disapear into the Chaos wastes? Maybe they found him corupted, and that's why he was lost, sort of a tragic figure like Horus... Speculation is fun :artist:
 
Ahh but after an 40k ork force leaves the next sporing is of savage ork guys. Perhaps it is just the materials that they have available that limits them to how advanced they can be.

actually the emperor did not find all of the primarch's there is still at least one undiscovered (there was 2 before we fiound out the alpha legion had twin primarchs) i don't think sigmar would classify as one though he seems a little small and short lived compared to the rest of the group,

but to get bakc on topic i think a frog is a good spellcasting superfreak, giant head to support deep thoughts fat body for long hibernations makes sense to me and good topic by the way
 
wow thats the most replies i've ever gotten to a topic in 1 day. lol. does anyone know why lord kroak killed millions of demons at once yet got owned by 7 puny blood thirsters? thats like 3500 pints to kill him after he killed 1000000. Thats like sigmar ripping nagash in half then getting killed by a vampire thrall. . Also has anyone though of making an uber strong model for when lord kroak was alive?
 
We'll it did say that they were Khorne Daemons, who do have anti-magic buffs.

He was holding the shield before and when it dropped he killed them all. After that much magic being used for so long I imaginge he was drained.

Fantastic thread :)

I havew always loved the slaan. (As fat froggies) It seems appropiate I always imagine them as extremely lazy and loathe to do anything other then contemplate and meditate.

Weh nthey do cast I dont reckon its with a floourish or anything just a hissed incantation and a lazy wave of the hand a nd a comet crashes into his enemies a yawn then the eyes close.

Haha the Slann lazily opens an eye, lifts a cheek and squeezes a big one out, all of a sudden a lightning bolt crashes down onto the enemy army, his eyes register nothing and he goes back into his deep meditative sleep.

It probably depends on the age of the Slann too. The picture in the army book of Mazdumundi seems to be fairly energetic, he is holding a big ball of energy above his head. I can imagine a second gen slann being very very slow and pondorous, just mumering to enact spells, but a younger 3rd or 4th gen being a bit more arm wavy. Surely their arms aren't so much skinnier than their bodies for a reason, because their arms are the only bit that gets excercise casting spells. :P
