AoS What do I need to start playing?

So I've never actually played a game of age of Sigmar. I bought the first generals handbook (2017?) and the Seraphon book to accompany it. Long story short, Uni was really busy and I only got to read them. Now it's summer and I have a boatload of free time on my hands.

What do I need to buy to play? (And are the old books relevant in any way?)Also, I'm tempted to buy the digital version for my fire tablet, what are your opinions on digital vs physical?

Generals Handbook 2018 that’s it, rest is available free of GW site, in fact you can get by without GHB by using Warscroll builder.

Does anyone know if the digital GHB 2018 unlocks allegiance abilities? It says I need to buy the 2017 book to unlock them?...
