From my understanding say you have a seraphon hero by 2 separate units of guard and the hero takes wounds and the guard us yes selfless protector but one of them fails can the other unit try as well? I don’t see anywhere it says one unit with this ability or anything along those lines

No, because the rule states that if the roll fails, its allocated to the Hero as normal, and thats the end of that.
