7th Ed. Temple Guard query

Hey guys,

Question from the new guy, Temple Guard.. 5+ Skaly Skin yeh.

They have Light Armour and Shield does this mean 5+ becomes 3+?

-1 for armor and -1 for shield?

...

Close. Halberds are a 2 handed weapons and can't be used with a Shield. Your save would be 4+ if you elected to use Halberds in combat.

you just cant have 2+ cause you aint using it in combat

It is not 3+. You don't get any benefit just for having it. You have to use it. Thats like saying I bought an extra hand weapon, a great weapon, a halberd so I should get +1A, +1Str, +2Str all together.

You either use the Halberd (no shield), 4+ save
or
You use the Hand weapon and shield, 3+ save or 2+ to the front (due to hand weapon and shield combo giving +1 extra armor save)

i havent until recently used anything thats 2 handed, as i only had h&s saurus


i read it as shield on a model is alway +1 save
better learnt before i actually play a game with TG though

You can run TG without the slann.. They are a special choice..
The diffrence is that without the slann they are not stubborn or ItP ...
Which makes them less effective as a tarpit unit.

Yes it does, but what if he is not on the board? If you have an army without a Slann you can still take Temple Guard, as I will probably do, they just aren't quite as effective.

Note that the TG will get a 3+ armour save against ranged attacks, because clearly at range you are going to choose to employ your shield rather than your halberd. It is just in combat if you choose to use the halberd, the shield cannot help you so 4+.

I don't think I would try to run them without a Slann, the thing that makes them near unbreakable is the stubborn and immune to psych they get from the Slann. Otherwise, you have some expensive saurus with +1 armor and the option to use halberds but only have 4+ armor.

Saurus +1 armour and +1 strength sounds good to me. They also have 1 higher WS and initiative don't they? The initiative won't do sh*t but the WS could do.

The trick to taking TG without a Slann I think is to use them as a small elite unit rather than a large block. 15 absolute max, otherwise 5/6 X 2 then use them as heavy yet small support units for Saurus. They are deceptive then, not really big enough to attract much enemy fire yet if they reach combat they will hit very very hard, as hard as a bigger unit but with a bit less static combat res, which is fine. The main reason to take them IMO is the models look really really cool, and when it comes down to it, warhammer is a hobby about models and I want to field the models I like not the models I have to, with a balance so I don't overpower or get mashed all the time of course.

true, TGs without slann could work wonders as a small elit unit going in for the kill. And, yeah the models is just awesome Anyone had some luck with lone TGs?

Then Again a unit of 20 with Heavens 4+ ward save spell on them will ruin anything's day when they charge it with a slann in them.

I once used 3 units of 20 temple guard in a 2000p game vs dwarfs. They draw all of their fire and destroyed every enemy infantry unit. Sure they use up half your army's points, but hey! you don't need much anything else. I had 3 units of skinks with a kroxigor to back the TGs, an EotG, Gor-Rok, BSB scar-veteran and some terradons.

I had a fun time experimenting the TGs, and I think they are awesome. However I'd still stick with the ordinary saurus just for the sheer amount difference. With the same money, you can get 4 blocks of saurus warriors, and without a slann in the army the SWs are more effective.

But as said above, I think they are a great shock unit when used in smaller amounts like 10-15.
