8th Ed. Temple Guard - For Slanns only?

Hey there folks!

Hope all is well. Just a quick question - is there ever a time when you would run Temple Guard as a solitary unit? or are they relegated only to protect Slanns? I ask because I have 20 of them now, but I'm not going to get a Slann until the rumoured Finecast one comes out... Until then, they are just sitting in a box waiting for action.

Are they any good as a stand alone unit?

Well they loos a lot of their abilites without the Slann, but as you are just starting out and are playing rater small games I immagine they aren't a terrible choice, definately better now that they can attack in 2 ranks.
 
I hear so much about finecast. What is it exactly? I know it's like the new resin or whatever. But is it worth waiting for? Are they all alternitive models or something or do people just want the new resin? I am also told that a lot of people are angry at them because the models they are getting are missing the finer details on the model. Like the resin didn't completely fill the mold in the first batch.
 
The temple guard by themselves are not bad, they are str 5 and are decent but a bit expensive without a Slann. The Slann makes them Immune to Psychology and Stubborn which means you'll probably be there until the last lizard.

As for Finecast, it is a Resin/Plastic mix... very light weight. I caution that so far I have seen very few Finecasts that I actually thought were better than their Metal counter-parts, and this coming from a person very against Metal.

This discussion might be better elsewhere but here's my quick thoughts:

Pros - it is light weight, requiring less pinning than a metal model. Also the light weight means there are less tipping problems than previously top-heavy models (oh, hello Slann). It does not shatter upon hitting the ground (metal models with lots of parts seem to have shattering problems). I have a feeling that there will be fewer problems with flying stands and these models. Final note: they are really nice looking, some of them have more quality and better detail than their metal counter-parts.

Cons - Some of the mold lines are really bad on these, and in a few rare cases the mold must have slipped so the two halves don't match up perfectly. Where there were gaps before, there are gaps still. Some worse, some not as bad. Lots of flash, but it usually breaks off by bending it with your finger (rather than needed clippers and hobby knife). Sounds like that should be a good thing? Unfortunately this also means some bits will also snap off that would not have snapped off metal models. More expensive.

There's good and there is bad to the Finecast. It is a matter of preference. My suggestion: get a model that you've been meaning to buy for a while and see if you like it. If you don't, no big loss because at least you got something you've wanted!

EDIT: forgot to mention, everyone I know who has gotten Finecast (at a GW) have been able to exchange their product if there were any problems with it. In fact, at the store I frequent, the staff prefer if you open it at the store and check to make sure everything is cool before you leave because they will exchange it on the spot.

actualy thats forgeworld, GW isn't using release agent on theirs.
 
As I prefer a skink army, the only way that I will take TG is to put a slann in the unit. The TG unit are a feared unit in my gaming club because it is so hard to kill the slann and the TG. Take lore of Life and they are that much harder to kill. Lore of Light helps as well, but in different ways.
 
I agree with everyone else, TG should be used with a slann. I used to run a unit of 30 TG by themselves and they did not outperform my 40 man saurus unit. They were able to handle monsters better, but other than that they died the same way as saurus, actually saurus are more survivable in combat than TG because they get a parry save as well as the 4+.
 
Yeah, I would only take TG with a Slann, and only if the Slann has Life or Light.
