So... my friends and I normally play 2500 points, and I made the mistake of teaching my friend how to make a Magic O.P. list. Taking Teclis, Banner of Sorcery, dispel scroll, the High Elf dispel scroll that makes you forget a spell, and a null stone thing that steals a die from your opponent. So he could very well get 8 extra dice added to his pool (to a max of 12 obviously).

This list was meant to be used in a campaign. We are allies and I needed him to defeat the Vampire Counts player. However, now he has turned on me and is running around solo, using this list.

I honestly don't know what to do against him. Sure I could use a Blood Statuette to kill him early in the game. But I need it to go off with double 6's or else Teclis will just dispel it, or he will use one of his three different kinds of dispel scrolls.

Anyone have any advice?
 
Boy, you created a monster that has turned and bit you!

Make sure that your slann has becalming cogitation. If he gets no 6s, alot of those spells will fail (he has to meet the minimum casting value to get IF). Next, make him waste his dispel dice/dispel scrolls before you use the statuette. Buff your units up and kill that banner that makes them immune to magic. Direct all the attacks that you can into that guy. The same will work for Teclis as well.

On the flip side, in the campaign either stay away from him or ask him to tone down that list a little (kind of difficult if you have helped him put it together).
 
Hopefully you didn't teach him to stick Teclis in the second rank as well. A scarvet cowboy straight into teclis should drop him in a round (extra hand weapon, or fencers blades) + cold one attack.
Trading 130 pts for 475 very good deal.

I agree with Becalming as well works wonders, if he fail to cast his first spell his 12 dice are wasted.
Death as a lore to snipe as well would work.
 
If you get lucky u can use the cupped hands paired with the bane head. Old Teclis ignores his first miscast not yours though.
 
Just letting y'all know this... But Teclis will cast a spell with irresitable force on any roll of a double. Double 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's. And if he miscasts, he ignores the first one every turn.

Our game yesterday, he did two spells every turn. Okkam's Mindrazor on his Spearmen, and Pit of Shades (boosted) on my Temple Guard (derping my Slann turn 2) and then on my Warrior block with my Oldblood.

In the 5 turns of the game, I dispelled 1 spell. It was Throne of Vines on his lvl 2 Mage.

I'm gonna make a list now and see how it works. He wants another game.
 
If you build a list to fight Teclis and it still goes that badly its time for the talk.

The one where you explain the game is about fun tactics not trying to break things.
 
Yeah. Just had that talk. He declares that he's a pro now.

How do you approach that? Especially when you see him every day because you also work with him.
 
Just tool up un every anti-magic item in out book, and a bane head/blood stature of spite.
you migth also try the lore of light against High Elves to elemate some of the re-rolling.
 
N810 is correct. You may need to take a few skink priests. I would take 3 additional skink priests. Here is what I would kit them out with:

Skink Priest 1 lvl1, forbidden rod, opal amulet
Skink Priest 2 lvl2, cube of darkness
Skink Priest 3 lvl2, dispel scroll, statuette

Slann BSB Lore of Light
Cupped hands
Bane Head

The forbidden rod priest will allow you to potentially own the magic phase and max out your dice for the winds of magic. When you roll a 3 on the winds, this will help quite a lot. That priest's job is to die for your magic phase.

The Cube priest should use his cube early in the game so that you can get to the HE units and get into combat. Hopefully, you will be able to end his magic phase as well.

It isn't a foolproof plan, but it should help.
 
Sometimes the simpliest answer is the best answer.

Teclis is a magic machine.. he pumps out spells like nothing and dispells like a beast. BUT, everyone has their limits.

If you fight fire with fire then everyone gets burned, a wise man uses water.

Chamo Skinks with an Oxyotl to sniper shots at Teclis is a good start.
If he is stuck in a unit then hammer it with salamander fire. Elves have notoriously low toughness so salamander fire should burn up his unit wicked fast.

Shooting not your style?

Old Blood on a carnosaur supported by a skink chief with war-spear on ancient stegadon and a normal stegadon. Too many juicy targets and high elves have no cannons. Instead of making him eat up your magic cram a craw full of dinosaurs down his throat and rip him apart in CR.
If he is on front rank then just don't declare a challenge and throw all attacks at him anyway.

The best part? You can EASILY build both of the above tactics into a single army and at 2500 points can even toss in a bare bones Slann if you really want. Go Life and throw out throne of vines to try and get him to remove that spell and when he thinks he has clenched you throw every die you can at dwellers below and watch his Teclis unit fade away. AND since dwellers isn't a template spell then Teclis gets no LoS rule to save him.

Save or die, sniper shooting, flaming template shooting, and big meaty dinosaurs that can tear apart high elf units. Magic is one of our strengths, but never forget it isn't our ONLY strength.
 
If teclis isnt bunkered in the second rank of a unit (remember that he would need at least 5 other command/character models in the unit, and if you kill the champion teclis would have to hop to the first rank. yes i know he could use a conga line unit as bunker, but that unit can easily be beaten and driven off since it wont be steadfast) He has 3 wounds, T2 and no save at all. A stegadon can charge the unit and kill him (remember the skink crew, you will need the extra attacks ;)) So could a unit of salamanders (with a bit of luck) not to mention a saurus unit.

that being said, Teclis is one of those characters that will be extensively changed in the next HE book, because he is simply not even close to balanced with the current magic rules. even if you assassinate him asap he can cause heaps of trouble. His spells WILL go through and there is nothing you can do about it. you will just have to win anyway. Salamanders are hard to "counter" if he uses shadow magic, and you could just use a tonne of them and shoot down his units.
 
Why has nobody recommanded Blood Statuette of Spite?! What am I missing here? It's a bound spell that makes any character (No LOS required, no range) take Toughness tests (and suffer an armour save) untill he passes, doesn't he have T2? It could kill in one turn if you're lucky!

It was mentioned early on. With the huge extra dice and three dispell scrolls HE can have though it would be hard to get through.

But worth a try.
 
yea you would have to draw out all of their dispell dice and scrolls before having a a reasonable chance of it going off.
 
Ah, I must have missed it then.. true about the luck thing, if he has dice to dispell it's probably not gonna work.. but then, it's a 25 pts. item so I would defenitly include it in your list if you're that scared of teclis.
 
Posting from my phone, and it's a bear to try and quote, but I would like to respond to the assertion that any double from Teclis results in IF.

You are incorrect! (Much to the benefit of cold-blooded generals everywhere).

..."and spell cast by Teclis will be cast with Irresistible Force on any SUCCESSFUL CASTING ROLL which includes a double"...

Gotta make the casting value to cast at all.

This makes becalming a very good counter, since it roughly equates to -1 to his casting roll per die thrown.

If he's taking oh so many points in magic becalm him, have a priest with a Cube of Darkness help slow him down, flame with many Salamanders turn 1 and ram a stegadon or 2 down his throat on turn 2.

Teclis can ruin your day, but he is overrated (only non-HE players can see the invisible rule for Teclis, it's called 'Giant Bulls-Eye')
