Hey guys,

I'm interested in getting 1000 and then up to 2000 points going, but I tend to gravitate to models I dig before I go for tactical considerations :) This would be my first army by the way.

I like the Slaan Mage Priest, the basic Saurus Warriors and Temple Guard, the Stegadons, and the flying models (forget the names). I'm not a huge fan of the skinks, the Kroxigors or the Cold one riders (seems like the Dark Elf cold ones are far cooler looking!).

Could a reasonably competitive list be built with these sorts of model choices? Or would, for example, not taking skinks "gimpl" me?

Best Regards

Jarrett

The lack of skinks will take a lot out of the army, especially for casting and shooting. But the lack of Kroxigors and Cold Ones will equally devastate you. However that being said it may not be impossible. what I would suggest is start with the models you like, play with it a few times, and see if you can make winning lists without the other units. I've never tried a skinkless/kroxigor list. Though I have player without saurus warriors, terradons and I've never played with a stegadon. I've one most games with those lists, however like I said not impossible just you will have to do a lot of tweaking and testing.

Ok. I guess if I don't paint the Skinks blue I might like them a bit more :)

Also, I could use the DE cold ones instead, just makes the unit pricier.

Up to you but like I said, I try your lists with just models you like first.

The lack of skinks i your army would be much more devastating to your army then not fielding Kroxigors or Cold Ones. In 6th Kroxigors were the only special choice I fielded (well those and Terridons). But with the lowering of Str and cutting the Skink Screen special rule they're not worth it any more.

As for cav; if you don't want to, or have the points, to field a stegadon Cold Ones are decent hard hitting flanker the army has left. The problem with them is that they're "stupid."

But out of the models you indicated, you'll be hard pressed to build a decent army, but it can be done. It'll just be very, very small.

An Example of what you could do:

HEROES: 500
Slann- Divine plaque of protection, Cube of Darkness, Dispel Scroll- 370
Scar-Vet- Light armor, BSB, Talisman of Protection- 130

TROOPS: 774
19 Saurus- Command, spears- 258
20 SAurus- Music, standard, spear- 258
20 Saurus- Music, Standard, Spear- 258

SPECIAL: 451
16 Temple Guard- command, Sun Standard of Chotec- 331
4 Terridons- 120

RARE: 275
Stegadon Ancient- 275

TOTAL: 2,000
Models: 82

Power Dice: 6
Dispel Dice: 5 + cube + scroll

Just watch out for magic heavy armies and fast armies. The center is harder than a rock but the flanks are left flapping in the wind. And that is where skinks come in.

Hm - ok cool. Im actually interested in more than 1 stegadon possibly (the model is so awesome). Was interested in at least one Engine of the Gods for example.

So if I take Skinks, things look a lot better?

Skink skirmishers are good for annoying the enemy, guarding your flanks and screening. Skink Cohorts are good for drawing out enemy units, mild harassment and supporting the flanks.

In 6th Skinks were a god send, now you'll be hard pressed to field more than two units of skirmishers (especially with javelins and shields, which is where Skinks really shine).

Skink Priests are a must if you want to boost your magic phase. The Engine (EoTG) is a spendy dino, but worth it's points, or so I've heard. You also add one in as a defensive caster as a level one and the diadem of power and you up your dispel pool by 3 but drop your power pool by 2.

Skink Chiefs are nice fun little "Ha! didn't see this comin stupid mage!" Slice, slice, slice. "Oh, shit! Gotta run!" Or "Look at my Stegadon! I'm Gonna crush you!" They fill the role of assassin, Giant dino. drivers, Johnny-on-the-Spot support with they're flying capabilities. They are the multi-purpose character.

Definietly! Altough we're talking skink skirmishers here... their 360 degree line of sight can be priceless to take out enemy flankers or at least delay them.

If you don't like the models, there is always an otion to modify them a bit you know altough If you are new to the modeling aspect you should probably try to paint a few model first to get a feel of what you like, theme e.c.
