8th Ed. Starting a new Army

Okay everyone so I want to start a new army...
I have been playing with both Skaven and Greenskins for a while. I took a brake from Warhammer a while back, and now my son is getting into it so I want to give him my current armies a begin my own reptile/amphibian armada.

Here are my thoughts on a 2500pt army, please give any changes and or likes and dislikes with this list.


General & Banner Bearer
Slann Mage Priest (Lore of Life)
w/ Focus of Mystery, Focused Rumination, Unfathomable Presence, & Higher State of Consciousness.
Carrying the Banner of Eternal Flame, a Staff of the Lost Sun, the War Drum of Xahutec, and Itxi Grubs.

Bodyguard of the General and Hammer Unit
Temple Guard x20
Full Command, Revered Guardian wielding the Blood Statue of Spite, and Standard Bearer carrying the Plaque of Dominion.

Core Units
Unit 1: Skinks x22
Full Command, plus two Kroxigor
with Tetto'eko

Unit2: Saurus Warriors x20
Full Command

Unit 3: Same as Unit 2

Special Units
Unit 1: Chameleon Skinks x5
with Oxyolt

Unit 2: Chameleon Skinks x6
with a Brave

Rare Units
Unit 1: Razordon Hunting Pack
1 razordon with 4 skinks

Unit 2: Salamander Hunting Pack
1 salamander with 4 skinks

Unit 3: Same as Unit 2

Well, you seem to have the basics down, so I wont completely optimize your list, I'll just give a few pointers. In short I like your unit selection but think you went a little bit magic item overboard.

First off, Tetto has a rule that he cannot be in a unit with kroxigors, Has to be one or the other.

Chameleon skinks are fantastic, but the brave is seldom worth it, you are better of spending the points towards another skink.

Oxyotl and Razordons, these guys are expensive for what they do. Nothing wrong with that, but if you find the army to be a bit weak with these guys in it I would try swapping them out.

Now on to magic items. If the reason you loaded up on magic items is to reach 2500 points, thats fine, but I think we can load you up better!

You took the blood statue of spite, a good item, but you wont have the power dice free to use it with your two loremasters. The mask of terror from the rulebook is a great replacement, otherwise a cheap magic weapon, or ironcurse icon all go a long way.

Staff of the lost sun is great on a skink chief, but your slann wont be able to use it much. I also avoid taking Higher state when in a temple guard unit as I get better results with more temple guard. I would swap these out for more models elsewhere like skinks or salamanders, or if you want another discipline go for soul of stone for double miscast protection.

Unfathomable prescence is a rip off, you can get the obsidian lodestone for 5 points cheaper if you are worried about getting blasted with magic.

As far as the war drum, you would be better off giving the slann the standard of discipline for a permanent +1 leadership instead of a conditional +1 leadership, then moving the banner of eternal flame to the temple guard unit. Marching rules changed in 8th edition so the war drum isnt as good as it used to be.

I believe my list will stay the same, but thanks again for your comments. If anyone else has anything that want to add I am still open for suggestions.
