8th Ed. Slann and mis casts advice needed

new to the lizzies and and seem to be learning from mistakes.

I played last night against the new dwarves (1500pts). it was going oh so well! after great advice on here fielded a scarvet cowboy on my inner flank with some jav skins out wide. They nailed his flank took out all his cannons and flank troops. i was loving it!

In the magic phase it started well, with walk between worlds working on the flanking skinks much to the stumpy dwarves suprise. then fiery convacation came off in turn one, nice.

Then two iresistable force spells in a row and Detonation. i lost around 14 templeguards of 20 in those two leaving my slann wide open.

Any advice on slanns and miscast protection?

We can't completely remove the chance of miscast, but we can do something to prevent blowing big holes in our guard unit.

1) wandering deliberation and book of ashur. It's expansive alright, but you'll be casting spells with 2 dice. Probably the most save option against miscast.

2) putting the slann in a unit of skinks. Miscast on skinks isn't that bad.

3) make the slann ethereal and away from nearby units.

4) put the slann on the side of your guard unit and minimize the amount of models in base contact with him.

5) start the game by having the slann outside your guard unit and cast the big spells. Once combat starts to begin you put him back in and casts augments/hexes that are generally more risk free.

6) learn how many dice that are needed for different casting values.

7) learn how to use your dice properly. Say you can only cast one spell for whatever reason, well don't over-do it if it isn't necessary. Risking IF on something lame just isn't worth it even though you have plenty of spells.

8) get the soul of stones discipline.

That should cover most.

I played a 2500 point game against Dwarfs over the weekend. Pretty much had it in the bag. I 2 diced Wildform on my TG unit since they were in CC with the Dwarfs and my Oladdin was going to get a charge off next turn with my Ancient Steg... I not only IF'd the 2 dice but I sucked my Slann into a vortex and killed the entire block of TG off.

You just can't prevent everything. I wasn't even mad, how could you be mad? I made the correct tactical decision and rolled the appropriate amount of dice.

Sometimes you eat the b'ar, and sometimes the b'ar eats you.

Pinktaco made a great list, I would only add putting him in a Skink Skirmisher unit at the start of the game works (consider the +1 move banner too) gives him a 10" move in any direction, and the unit doesn't care much about miscasts, nothing is in b2b contact and templates won't catch much. You can cast the big spells with far less concern then bump him into the TG when you anticipate combat starting.

I avoided miscasts in my Slaan by being certain to get an older metal one. The finecast is too prone to oddities and bubbling in the plastics for my tastes.

I echo what the others said, and absolutely stress picking a lore that has lowish casting values so you can throw fewer dice and rely on the static +4 from caster level. Fire and Light are pretty solid in that respect, as is Wandering Deliberations. Add the book as Pink Taco suggested for really upping the reliability. That is the single best way to prevent the miscasts.

thanks for all the advice guys.

tried using WD last night which worked well. Even though there are no really powerful spells i found i could easily get 3/4 spells off consistantly without risk.

With less risk. If you say no risk, you are taunting the easily angered dice gods who will make their displeasure known. I have miscast on two dice multiple times.
