8th Ed. skinks + javelin

hello fellow coldbloods,

According to the BRB, the javelin uses the user strength and quick to fire. What i want to confirm is that skinks with javelin are potentially good if they get buffed by slann, ie wyssan's wildform, arent they?

and the range 12" is minimum right? meaning i can go 24" with no penalties? if so, it is much better than blowpipes.

You are correct. The effective range is 24 inches (12 inch march with a 12 inch range). You will get a -1 for the long distance due to being more than 6 inches from your target. That will put you hitting on 5-6. The buff to strength will give them a str 4 wound.

if i put skink chief with the armor piercing banner in the skirmishing unit, they get the effect too right?

Yes, but why would you want a Skink BSB if you already have a Slann running around? Why not just make the Slann BSB?

Wolf is right. The only time that I would even consider a skink BSB is in lower points games (no slann) or in a game where I want to try out the skavenpelt banner (skink only banner). Although, with some of those beasts character buffs, you would probably be a little more survivable.

Thought I would add in this thread as well, prompted by mocell's musings I was wondering about casting Okkam's mindrazor on the skinks to make their javelins S6... I mentioned this in the other thread about Lizardmen shooting and magic in the Tactics forum.
It's just occured to me (no rulebook to hand) that Okkam's mindrazor might only work in combat, though (which would suck), can anyone confirm this?

yep, only close combat attacks.

now that you mentioned it, slann as BSB will be tons of points on lords. with chief on heroes, the allocation would be a bit easier and the chief can join the skirmisher unit anyway. more flexible i would say.

of course a slann is very common as the BSB with inspiring presence.

but still, i need to try this on the battlefield to see the effectiveness

To be honest, I find the argument that a Slann BSB is a ton of points to be kind of void... a Slann is a lot of points, the extra 25 for making him BSB are fairly small when you view the whole package

true, but we still need to add the points of the banner + 25points itself.

or maybe im still inexperienced with the character magic items, bsb and stuff.

I have decided to try a skavenpelt banner in a game on Friday. I am going to park a beasts slann in a unit of saurus warriors (to try this tactic out) along with the skink bsb with the skavenpelt banner. I am also going to put 2 or 3 scar-vets in there. Then try to cast the higher versions of the beasts buff spells. I am giving the slann the crown of command as well. The thought is to keep the slann out of the front rank (if posssible) due to the number of characters in the unit.

If I have time tomorrow, I will post the list I will take. It is a 4000 pt game. Probably against Brettonia (or maybe High Elves).
