If the stegadon was taken, I'd drop the chief on top.
If our big friend get's charged, the attacks from the knights will kill the chief on top anyway.
And the stegadon is slower than any of his knights...(M6 vs M8). And this way you have less points tied op in that 1 area. If the ancient stegadon charges a unit, regardless of war-chief, it will do serious damage.
Anyway, let's look at the pro's and con's.
Pro Stegadon+warspear chief:
-Terror
-BIG hammer
-BIG monster
-some form of shooting
-stubborn
-Can take a hit, but isn't invulnerable whatsoever!
Cons: Stegadon+warchief:
-LOTS of points (if charged by a lance, 1 break test and the steggie might go down...)
-Opponent might have the 'monster killer' setup on his lord. Meaning he can killing blow your monster to death!
-A lance of grail knights might slay it in a round
-2 lances might be able to slay it in a round
-Chief on top is easily dispatched
-Trebuchet has a sweet target...
Pro's 2 scarvets:
-2 Semi-hammers that kill a knight or 2 every round
-Tough to kill
-Cheaper than Steggy
-Emphasize the 2 aspect again. 2 targets are harder to kill than 1. They can also be in 2 places, whereas the steggy cannot
Cons:
-Stupidity! A failed test might see of that flank charge...
-Let's emphasize that as well: STUPIDITY!
Now it is your job to give each of those points (You can come up with more, I know..) and weigh them out. Do you want that big hammer for the counterpuch? Or go with 2 solid characters, but suffer from stupidity...
Some side notes...
Definetaly go for GW and SH on your scar-vet on foot. That way he can choose between a good armour save (hw+shield), or awesome strenght with the great weapon.
Remember to challenge with your scar-vets, if you decide to go for them, if he accepts: good. Your heroes are more potent in close combat than his. If he refuses: good, he now lost his ward save for the character+the unit he is with!
Remember to challenge with your skink chief! Same as above...AND as an added bonus; only the character/champion (technically, the champ is also a character. But meh..) can attack. You have to leave your skink crew out the fight....Fair trade!
So his choice:
Accept with character/champ and let him die. Unit cannot attack.
Decline, lose ward save and unit can attack.
A win-win situation.
Good luck in choosing, and good luck with your battle!
