8th Ed. Shadow Attribute question

So, this may be a silly question, but I'm not 100% on this.

If I am running a shadow slann all by his lonesome. I cast a spell successfully, and get him to jump around afterwards (switch places with a friendly character within 18") can I switch the Slann, who wasn't in a unit before, with another character who is/was in unit?

Sooo, what I'm wondering is, I usually run my scarvet in a fatty unit of saurus, but they're slow to get into battle with movement 4. However I can steed of shadows my slann up a head with my first spell, cast some funny buisness up a head, and then jump my slann back into the unit of saurus by switching places with the scarvet, and continue on with my turn knowing; now my slann is safe in a unit, and my killy scarvet is free to dance around and be a badass. Another similar situation would be to jump my slann into a unit of skirmishers switching out the priest that used to be in that unit... assuming the priest doesn't have a dispel scroll or something not worth losing. (unlike the scarvet, if I jump the priest too close to an enemy unit, it might be the death of him)

So ya, can I jump into a unit, even though the slann previously was a lone character??

I don't see why not, but before I pull this tomfoolery, I wanted to make sure this funny buisness is legal OR find out if it's not.

could you sawap your Slann with and cold blood on a Carnasaur ?

Just bear in mind this may cause thier opponent to lose the contents of thier bowels...

but yes all questions to be answered!! hopefully somebody can get thier two cents in with a bit of knowledge to back it up... the way I see it, is I'm still a noob to the Grammar and wording in warhammer, which tends to leave me befuddled... sadly all too often.

Edit: although now that I think about it, I don't think you could swap places with the carnosaur, on account the carnosaur is a monster, not infantry. It's a shame however, on account, that'd be awesome.

I still don't see the issue with jumping into a unit though...

anybody got some insight?

Yea, you have to switch with the same type (infantry). But, that would be an excellent way to sneak an old blood into combat. I can see it now:

"I charge my Slann into your unit of Knights!"

"Really, Ok!"

"My Slann uses the Shadow Attribute to switch with this oldblood!"

"Oh, Sh#%!"

The old blood is an infantry, does his troop type change to that of his mounts?

if he's mounted, then he's Cavalry. which means no swap. You could swap out with any other Infantry on the board within range- which CAN be awesome for say... Skink with cape (but why bother? you can cast thru it already...).

Edited for remembering we're in 8th edition now.

Basically swap him for something close to a skirm unit, or a TG unit, or a solo unit. As long as he's straight Infantry, you're safe. Too bad you can't put him on a Steg with good results lol

oh on a similar thought,

a Carnie Old Blood with a Wizard Hat and a EotG Skink Priest will fit in a 2000 point army.

1 in 8 chance you roll up the lore of shaddow....

I don't know if that would be tactical, but if I play a game of that crazy size I'm definitely going to have to try that. The thought puts a smile on my face.

I.e. the slann wasn't in a unit before spell was cast, and the Scar Vet was...

Now the spell has been cast, enabling me to use Smoke and Mirrors.

Can I switch the slann with the scar vet? So now the Slann will be in a unit, and the scar vet will be all by his lonesome, even though prior to using the attirbute, the slann was alone and the scar vet was in the unit.


Can I do that??

I think so, the Slann is technically infantry so they can swap with infantry with Steed of Shadows. They still can't ever leave Temple Guard so a solo Slann can swap places with a Scar Veteran but a Temple Guard bunkered Slann can not. There is no reason a Slann can't join a unit of regular Saurus or shadow jump into one (though since has to be in the front rank, and displace a lot of fighting Sauri from the front rank it may not be tactical).
