8th Ed. Saurus block width

Hi guys. Working on my Saurus block and TG block and had a quick question. From what I have read, the standard seems to be 6 across and X deep for a Saurus block in a normal game, right? 6x4 for a TG with Slann block? Thanks!

I disagree there. I always go with 5 wide. The extra 2 or 3 Saurus attacks are not worth potentially putting more enemies in contact. Even when the damage output is valuable, another rank for Steadfast is often better than the attacks.

I almost always go 6 wide in Saurus as well as Temple Guard. With the Saurus, it fits my play style. With TG, it is a matter of giving the slann the most protection. Usually, when I take a large saurus group, it will be a huge unit of about 40 saurus. If I had only about 20-25, I would probably go for the 5 wide unit.

The five wide for the TG is a real symmetry issue for me. Same thing with a horde pushing the bell.

Generally when facing a horde it is best to go horde as well, if you have 40 or so in a unit, saurus will almost always strike last but will still hit hard!

I personally tend to go 5 wide, but I also generally use 20 saurus or so.

Thanks for the input everyone! I have 40 Saurus so I am thinking for small games I can do 2 units of 5x4 and bigger games a big block of 6x6.

do you have some spare bases ? you could make unit fillers and boost your units to 50 or even 60 if u are artistic enough

I use either blocks of 24 or 30, both 6 wide. Mostly for the looks.

5 Wide for Saurus 6 wide for TG.
Mainly because of the trays I have made up and for the Symmetry of the TG/Slann
Althought I've been tempted to modify my trays so I can easily deploy the saurus in only two ranks for hells cannons or other heavy template armies.

Hmm...ok, so maybe for the Saurus I should just make 5x and 6x movement trays. I agree with everyone, though, about the symmetry for the TG. Asymmetrical unit for the general would make me twitchy. Thanks!

Easy, ten wide for Saurus if you've a non life combat list( you want to win by killing so go horde for more killing), 5 wide if you're running life as you want to take no damage and win on ranks and break steadfast. As for temple guard I never really take them as they require life or willingness to accept a miscast that will kill 8+ models easy.

i USUALLY go 5-6 wide with my units, BUT if you come up against something really foolish, like a horde of goblins/zombies/skeletons or other very weak infantry, do not be afraid of going 10 wide even if you only have 20 models in the unit.

20 sauruses in horde formation will kill an average of 13,33 zombies per turn, netting them a CR of 15,33 with a rank and standard. compare this with if you go 5 wide, you kill on average 6,67 (plus standard and two ranks (cause at least one guy is dead) landing you at 10.67. Thats a huge difference against crumbling enemies, and against the goblins it means that some day you may be able to finish them off... maybe

5 to 7 wide, depending on the opponent, situation and battle-terrain.
5 wide in case of small infantry-base units of 5 to 6 wide.
6 on average
7 when facing enemies that like big units like Skaven or Vampire Counts, so my saurus can kill more, without getting too much of a disadvantage.

TG, always 6 wide, just looks cool ~w~
