7th Ed. Salamander Question

How does the US of salamanders work? Do we count all the wounds we have ( Skinks+ sala)? For victory points do we count the remaining wounds or models? The armor of a skink chief on a steg is it calulated like this: light armor+ shield + ancient steg= 0 armor save or is it only the steg armor +2?

I'm not too sure on the Salamanders, but the armour from stegadons can't be improved with armour or shields. Check the army book, page 55. Before I read it myself I was toying with the idea of magic armours and such for the chief myself ^^

I do know the stegadon armor save can't me modified in any way, so an ancient steg gives a chief a 2+ armor save that can't get any better. Normal stegadons give 3+ armor saves...

From the FAQ:

Q. What is the Unit Strength of a
Razordon/Salamander – US1 or US3?
A. Unit Strength 3, which, means that missile
fire at the unit does not suffer a -1 to hit
penalty.

Salamander is 3, extra 1 for each handler.

thx guys for the fast reply! So what happen for victory points of half-unit? Do you count the total unit strenght divided by two or the total models divided by two?

Victory points are determined by number of models not Unit Strength. So if you have 1 salamander pack (3 handlers) and you've lost 2 of the handlers, it is worth half the victory points for your opponent.

in the Salamander Hunting pack profile
the Salamander it self does have the Skirmish special rule and in the BRB page 67 says skrim recieve a extra -1 to their shooting. not sure why the faq says different.

It also says 'man-sized' when referring to skirmishers that give an extra -1 to hit penalty when being shot at by the enemy.

A Salamander is a skirmishing monster for the purposes of moving, determining charge arc and of course being charged in return but due to its large size it does not grant the bonus -1 to hit from enemy shooting.

Yeah the -1 to hit only refers to US 1 skirmishers...

to me it appears the entire unit should receive the -1 to hit other wise you random before hits.

Ohh, I understand now what you are getting at.

If you roll to hit applying -1 for Skirmishing then its unfair for the shooter as they would normally hit the Salamander easier.
If you roll to hit without the -1 for Skirmishing then its unfair for the Skinks as they would normally benefit from the extra -1.

Why don't you Roll for allocation first, as per the book, 1-4 Salamander, 5-6 Skinks.
Take all the 1-4 dice, Roll them not applying the -1 for Skirmishing, resolve wounds, etc..
Take the 5-6 dice, Roll them applying the -1 for Skink Skirmidhing, resolve wounds, etc..

Interesting point, but I am pretty sure the mere presence of the larger creature makes the unit as a whole much easier to hit thus the -1 does not apply at all, even to the skinks. In fact, the randomization is meant to represent the salamander being easier to hit than the skinks and somewhat takes the place of the normal -1 to hit for skirmishers.

Sal is US3 so the unit dose not get -1 same for terradons as they are flying cav and US2.

In my games i will request to random before hit. due to the change of the rules in mid game.


and this is why i stop playing for a while.
Rules are written then changed and people dont play by one or the other.

there is no rule to say you have to play by FAQ's .. and most dont follow.

Well the FAQs are by games workshop, and sorry to burst anyone's bubble but...they made the game....it's their rules...

You can't ignore the clarifications and corrections, and even though the rules sometimes are silly, or GW logic is ridiculous, you still have to play by them...

Otherwise your playing by house rules, in which case you can't really say "the rule means this", because I doubt people come onto the forum and ask questions about your house rules, Lol...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but page 28 of the rule book quite clearly spells out that in FAQ the unit does NOT get -1 to hit. It was never changed or faq'd to be different, the FAQ just mentions it because people forget it alot.


If an FAQ DOES change the rule, it is to be treated as part of the main rulebook. Most just clarify what they meant for things people frequently ask about (Hey, FAQ!)
