8th Ed. Salamader Shooting Attack?

A thought occurs, Salamanders ranged attack...what type is it? I can't find a specific designation in the Armybook although the FAQ states it is NOT a Breath Weapon. The closest thing I can find in the BRB by description is Fire Throwers (Page 114). Basically I am curious whether or not it could hit an enemy unit engaged in close combat. Fire Throwers seem to be able to: all of the other war machines in that section specifically state if they cannot be fired into combat/fired in such a way that they could hit a combat and Fire Throwers have nothing about that. Ideas?

This is kinda a can of worms....

I play it as 'you cant shoot into combat so i cant shoot so i might over-shoot into combat.'

Template weapons can't be aimed into combat, but they can hit people in combat. Moving 2" from something and firing 'at' it, really intending to hit the unit in combat a foot past your target, is technically legal. Many people will call this exploitative though.

Then again, not many people call it poor form to cast Purple Sun into or through combat (or at least, don't call it poor form any more often than normal ).
