A discussion on the Warhammer Forum pointed something out that I hadn't considered before -- a Razordon or Salamander can serve as a pretty good shield for catching cannon balls to protect stuff immediately behind. A big reason why is that if the wounding hit gets shunted off to a skink, the cannon ball should stop because the Razordon/Salamander is still alive.

If it gets hit, then there a 3 opportunities for it to absorb the cannon ball:

1) Failure to wound at all
2) Successful wound gets passed to a skink crew. The Razordon was not killed, so by the letter of the rules it should stop here even if a crew died.
3) Razordon/Sallie takes the hit, but multiplied wounds don't kill it

Taking all this into account, the beast will be killed and will allow the cannonball to continue 37% of the time. So that means that 63% of the time, it absorbs the cannonball. Of course, this assumes that the ball actually hits the beast and doesn't just fly over to hit the model behind, but still not bad.

hmmm... Might not be a bad Idea to use Razorddons as Cannon Hunters then... :smug:

hmm... Nice catch! (I now have an image of a skink trying to encourage a razordon to catch an incoming cannonball in it's mouth... "alright fluffy, here it comes!")

If an EotG's is nearby you'll also have a 6+ ward to throw down... not to mention the chances of a misfire!
