I'm a sucker for classic dwarfs.
They might be a tad boring by now for many people, but not for me.
And as I am relatively new to the world of Warhammer I don't know them well either so the Warhammer variant is _kinda_ fresh for me.
Voted #2.

Out of the GW ones, imho KO are the most interesting. They're novel while staying true to the original concepts. It's one of the few good examples of the lore in AoS actually expanding on the original stuff instead of just blowing it up and than putting almost the same thing back in its place.

Nothing wrong with a classic! Not everything has to be fresh and new.

I completely agree. They are their own unique idea. They borrow the most basic of elements from WFB but then take it to bold new places. They stand as my favourite purely AoS army.

I don't want to see my name inscribed in some Book of Grudges.
Still better to make it in the book of grudges then to end up on the wrong side of the Dawi-Zharr. ;)

...but NOT "dispossessed", just to be clear.
They're just the remnants of the once proud WFB Dwarfs. I put it in there based on the previous comments of @Lord-Marcus . In fairness, there could be AoS players voting in the poll who have never seen the WFB Dwarf armies and are only familiar with the current stuff.

Never thought you’d go this far with the Dwarf discussion mate - keep it coming!

I voted classic Fantasy Dwarfs for the reasons mentioned in the thread from which this deviated, although if GW give Fyreslayers some really different new stuff as part of a second wave to give them some more variety, they could rise to the top of my list.

We’ll have to see.

meh to be honest, there also isn't a whole lot they can do with fyreslayers beyond what they already have in terms of variety.

- They don't wear armour, or even clothing in general, so there's little to distinguish units in that department.
- They don't use a whole lot of different tools/weapons either. It's just sturdy axes and polearms basicly. So you can't really introduce variety here either unlike say the KO who invent all sorts of weird and novel nonsense and thus easily can add another gun or something.
- They aren't very varied in terms of warfare either. It's not like in fluff they also have woodland scouts, or marines, and we simply haven't seen them yet. The units we have perfectly describe their armies.
- We already have models for all of their various castes/classes in societies. So there's no real oppertunities there either to introduce say the priests or something.

Adding something using any of those aspects would require a lot of extra fluff to justify it.

the only thing I can think of that they can do, without needing to add a whole lot of fluff to justify it, would be introducing more beasts of war. Maybe riding baby magmadroths, or some creature that has a symbiotic relationship with the magmadroth.

All in all, I keep finding it weird they took what was merely a cult and somehow expected to build an entire society around it.

I voted KO, mostly because I'm a sucker for steampunky aesthetics (second only to azmayatecian), and grumbly angry dwarves are a favorite trope. The ornate steampunk look of their suits and ships, alongside the Battletome artwork has a hold of me.

On top of that, their lore is pretty interesting, and expanded AoS a fair bit itself. Sky Leviathan's? Gaseous Gold? I can dig it.

My vote goes to the mighty Chaos Dwarfs for several reasons.

  1. Lore/Background/Fluff ➤ A perfect blend of the best elements of Dwarfs and Chaos. They still possess the strict rules, discipline, craftsmanship and an (albeit twisted) sense of honor of the Dwarfs but intermixed with the sweet sweet blessings of Chaos. All this taking place in the backdrop of the fire and brimstone filled Chaos wastes. The intermix of machine and daemon is also a fun and interesting angle, one which I've loved ever since the release of the Hellcannon (of which I own three and a half metal beauties).
  2. Model Aesthetics ➤ The Forge World Legion of Azgorh range is stunning. It is expensive as holy hell, but stunning. I love the look of the infernal guard and their war machines some of the very best. The Bull Centaurs are pretty damn cool and who the doesn't love their flying Bale Taurus? And of course the previously mentioned Hellcannon and the Iron Daemon :wideyed:. The only models I find to be so-so are the Fireborn, but maybe I would change my mind if I saw them in person. That said, there are no weak models in the range. The only downside is that there are holes in the range, but that does present some interesting modelling opportunities.
  3. Play-style (8th ed. WFB) ➤ I find them so much more versatile than their standard Dwarf brethren. Overall not as strong perhaps, but they are well situated in the middle to low-upper tier in terms of power level. I find regular Dwarfs to have a pretty limited set of play styles, but the same cannot be said of the Chaos Dwarfs. While the Chaos Dwarfs can run a very impressive gun line (just shy of regular Dwarfs) they are not completely bound to it. They have a wide array of unit types: monsters, monstrous infantry, monstrous beasts, cavalry, unique and of course infantry and war machines. They have speedy elements (Destroyer, Bull Centaurs, Taurus, Hobgoblin Wold Riders), resilient elements (Infernal Guard, Destroyer, Bull Centaurs, Iron Daemons, Hellcannons etc.) and cheap horde troops (Hobgoblin Cutthroats). Most importantly, unlike Dwarfs, Chaos Dwarfs can wield magic (and have their own really awesome magic lore with the most versatile spell in the game!). I love magic and it is easily my favourite phase in the game. They also have a couple of good magic items (Chalice of Blood and Darkness anyone? :angelic:). They could use a few more special characters to round out the army (as well as a dedicated combat fighting lord), but I guess they can't have everything.

Hard one to pick the best.

I don't know any thing about fluff or playabillity of the dwarfs in general.
But on model aesthetics alone I have a struggle between two of them:

- Dispossessed: The footfolk and heroes look amazing. also the copters are great.
- Kharadron Overlords: because of their airships but i dislike their armor-suits

I think I'll go for Dispossessed.
