7th Ed. Old blood on Carnosaur or Slann Mage

I have 2000 pt game this coming weekend. I am torn between using a slann mage and an old blood on a carnosaur with the blade of realities. I ask this because I want to use them both equally. But I would rather go with the one that would be the most fun to play. I have never feilded either one.

The idea of running across the field and eating everything in the way sounds like a blast. Also, the idea of channeling a spell through a preist is cool too.

Help me here guys, what is your input.

My foes could be any of the following:

tomb kings
high elves
wood elves
skaven
the empire
orks and goblin
bretonians

i'm a little bias in this decision here but i'll say it anyways. OLDBLOOD ON CARNOSAUR!!!!!
blade of realities is vicious. you'll love it. you just have to make sure you hit something. lol. and don't worry, i don't really rely on the oldblood to do all the wounds, i mainly rely on my S7 carnosaur to take care of that seeing how its D3 wounds.

if you say fun, a slann to me is more of serious play because the slann SHOULD dominate the magic phase in every way especially with 2 skink priest. when it comes to it, a slann would be great against the Tomb Kings but besides that the slann can kill emipire generals and so on, but you'll be investing more points in my opinion because i would never run a lone slann at about 400pts without the temple guard which makes the whole unit pretty darn expensive.

instead consider running the carno with 2 or 3 infantry blocks and you'll need an EotG just for magic defense so don't forget diadiem and a scroll for the priest. i always have fun with my OB w/ Carno. but that's just my opinion.
 
I currently do not have any temple guard anyway. The slann would be running solo. I will have an EOTG and an additional preist to round out my magic (going for a happy medium between offense and defense).

I think your choice depends on your style of play. If you play to win a Slann chances are will help out more to aid you, not to say an Oldblood can't help you win but a Slann gives you a few more strategic options. Same applies if you like to sit back and wait for your enemy to come to you - Slann is the way to go!

If like me you want one of the best looking models (IMO) as your centrepiece to your army and/or like to close with the enemy quickly and engage in CC then go for the Oldblood on Carnosaur. An Uber Lizard on a T-rex is so much cooler than a frog! :D

I think i'm a little bias as well when it comes to this discussion but i'd have to say oldblood and carnosaur all the way. My first army was Helfs and had my fill of magic'y armies. If you have the means run both to see whats more enjoyable. Good luck!

I vote for Old Blood/Carnosaur as well. I love close combat and I love getting my monster on! :D The Slann is awesome but my magic phases are always so fickle that I really hate relying on them.
 
Against those armies you will probably want to engage in CC as quickly as possible. If you take the slann then you will be inclined to play defensivly to protect the big guy which is just no good or you'll have to take a temple guard which is one big point sink. Take the carno, belt up the board hammering everything in your way. Your priests, of which you will be taking 2 lvl 2's if equipped properly will still put out a good magical offence and hold a good magical defence. Then just PoF everything just for fun...(I like to roll 24 dice then watch my opponent as I re-roll 1's...then move onto the next squad...

One thing I suggest with your decision between OB/Carno and a SMP is that if you choose ob/Carno build I would go magic defensive (lvl 2 SP w/ diadem & scroll EotG optional) and work over with lots of good CC stuff. A Chief on A. Steg w/ Warspear is an excellent partner to your Carno. If you want a Slann then go magic crazy (EotG, lvl 2 skink, second lvl 2 optional). If your gonna go one way, go all the way.

chameleon skinks x10 (I just love these guys-- the idea shooting from behind the enemy plus poison shots--I know that many think they are over priced, but these guys are the reason that I play Lizardmen. I will work them into whatever list I can).

Terradon x 4 (these guys are AWESOME. Another that is a must for every list)

skink skirmishers x 2 units of 10

Saurus warriors x 15 with full command.

Casting dice: 11 dispell dice: 7
2000pts on the dot.

List 2 Carno List

Saurus Old Blood on Carnosuar with blade of realities, enchanted shield, and dragonfly of quicksilver

cold one Cavalry with full command and jaguar standard

skink priest lvl2 on EOTG with dispell scroll and power stone

skink priest lvl2 with dispell scroll and power stone

chameleon skinks x 10 (see above, gonna keep these guys)

Terradons x 4 (again, keepers)

skink skirmishers x 2 units of 10

saurus warriors x 15 with full command

casting dice: 7
dispell dice: 5
1995 points

I have considered using a skink chief either on a terradon or on an ancient stegadon for this group. Ancient stegadon with the stegadon lance to get the 2d6+1 impact of course.

Any input is appreciated.
 
Well if your going with carno i'd say make room for the A.steg with chief and warspear. Like JohnMavrick said the carno and warspear steg are best friends. Your opponent will more times than not go home crying =D
 
you don't have to have the chief on A. Steg when your oldblood is on the table. but like most characters, you don't want them running around on their own. so if you don't mind your OB on his own then by all means feel free. but i only use my OB when my chief on A. Steg is on the table. i like to think of the OB on Carno as a all out offensive combat list. the second priest shouldn't really be there IMO. i really like the terradons in this list, but i just don't see where the camos fit in, especially for those points, you could bring something else, or even upgrade a few things, like more saurus to make it 20, and you could try and find the pts for the big Chief. but in all cases, try it all out. you'll find out what you like and what works for you. oh and try spears on your saurus.
 
I always use spears on the saurus. I tried the shield and hw one time. That was enough for me. Two ranks of 6 with spears = 24 attacks.
 
I think about the only time I'd take a unit without spears is if I could have AHW, 21 attacks on the charge (7 frontage) would be dang nice if your going against a hoard of skaven or some other army which has a lot of cheap units (Empire, O&G).
 
I put together another list. This one has the Slann, EOTG, and a skink chief on an ancient stegadon.

Still not sure at this point.
 
What point level are you at? Might want to post your list under the Lizardmen army list section. You'll probably get more help on it and we'll be able to stay focused on this thread's intent.
