I am brand new to the Warhammer Fantasy world. I've been looking at a few army lists and it seems that everyone goes for the spears for the warriors. Is a regular close combat weapon a good choice or is spears the best choice? I am going to have a Slann in my army also.

Depends, regular weapons give you a 6+ ward save in close combat. Spears give you an extra rank. I think spears are horrible for lizardmen, you are always going to hit last in combat, so you might as well increase your odds of survival. If you were hitting first with spears, yeah they're beneficial, but that's not the case.

It really can go both ways. I prefer the 6+ hand weapons/shield save and then spending the 30 points or so from spears on some skinks or extra handlers or something.
If you play a very defensive army and expect to be charged more than you are charging then spears are a good investment.
If you plan on being aggressive and charging a lot then spears will be less useful as you will lose one round of use every time you charge.
Honestly the correct answer is to play a couple games with both options and see which you prefer.
