AoS My go at expanding upon the AoS flight mechanics

Ah so if you are swooped or for some reason on the ground you get the bonus?

Yes but also on your normal flight height (2"or 3".. I like the 3" better for reasons above) anything above that then no benefit. That will make you think about going up high versus ranged units that then might have a better shot at you, giving it a more tactical purpose.

Would you also introduce a ruling over flying high so you cant be shot at (or seen by the enemy) but you would need to lower your height before you could attack or contest an objective. Therefore you have freedom to move around the battlefield in safety until you want to impact on the battlefield.

Or would this contradict rules like the TK carrion, who can fly high and be safe, but still contest objectives and drop back down and charge in the same turn?

I was considering adding something about being above the clouds were you would be safe. Only issue I spotted was, as you said, It would clash with lots of warscroll abilities. I guess I could put in a small clause that would say "unless otherwise stated by the warscroll" The Duck Tape of the rule writing world.

I was also contemplating adding a rule that would allow movement down to be free up to a certain amount of inches. Could be interesting to allow for some kind of dive bomb tactics. So for example to you could move down for free upto 5" before you start to spend your movement allowance.

I quite like the idea of a "dive bomb" ruling - but I suppose that is already nicely encapsulated with 'swooping dive'

Yes, but swooping dive only applied during the combat phase as re-rolls. This would help with mobility. I could try combining the two and have it so if you declared a swoop in the movement phase you could move down for free and gain the re-rolls that the normal ability gives you.

hmmm possible - swooping dive does state that you end up on the ground as a result and not just x inches lower than your starting height...

speaking of combat - is there the scope to think about aerial combat? I may straying into a whole new mini-system here though

There is definitely scope for that! I was hoping to make it a little more then just Z axis rules. We even have aerial combat specialists with the Master of the Skys.

It would be awesome to build a list with air interceptors to take out big sky targets. I'm not sure what to add to make it truly interesting though, any thoughts?

well you could try doing something similar to impact hits - hit and run attacks - combat only lasts a single round then both sides disengage alowing for swoop => Hit => attack => regroup => swoop => Hit repeat tactics.

I'm trying to think of a good old cavalry on cavalry battle mixed with a bit of dogfight maneuverability.

Outside of your imagination, you are slightly restricted on available units in AoS, rippers, terradons, flying bret cav, great eagles, dragons, vargheists, bat swarms, carrion - what else have i missed?

I suppose you could say that Slann can make all seraphon fly so include the above list to have stegadons, bastiladon, Krox, carnosaur.. thats making me giggle just thinking about it: A very bemused carnosaur trying to eat a unit of carrion high up in the clouds, like a dog trying to reach a biscuit in a zero gravity environment

Hmm. One idea around that would be to have a kind of follow though. Any unspent movement points can be used at the end of a combat phase after a successful charge to allow for a fly-by attack from above then diving down almost out of range.

Looking at units I fell it would be really cool to add some kind of flying mage. I could just imagine spells to affect wind to allow for a movement advantage for you team in the air. That kind of thing.
