Upgrading lvl 1 to lvl 2 seemed mandatory, after a few games he usually gets a nice spell, and hated to take dice from the army pool. Now it seems more eficient.

Edit: What about, taking away the power stone and the GW on the Saurus, and give the skink with cloak the Rod of Storm.
My most common enemies are WoC, Empire, Dark Elves and Skaven.
they got some magic protecion.
WoC. My targets will be, unit of 15 Chosen, Lonely mage in Disc. He got 2 lvls 2, and 4 scrolls. 4 DD and 4 scrolls. He got a unit of 5 knights with a lord, but got MR2.
Dark elves, ill target cold one knights or maybe even Dark riders or black guard, depending on the situation. He got lvl 4, 2 lvl 2s, and 2 or 3 scrolls.
Empire. Guy on altar, priest on horse, 2 lvl 2. ill target a unit of 7 to 8 outriders. the no range restriction seems very usefull on this guys. he got 7 DD, and 2 scrolls.
Skavens. 3 lvl 2s with 1 scroll each. so, 5 DD and 3 scrolls. first target would be 7 to 8 jezzails, or maybe a ratling gun.
what do you think, is it whort to make this change?
