8th Ed. Multiple Salamanders in one pack

If I take 2 salamander / razordon with 6-8 handlers, I know from rules they have to shoot at same target, but do I use template and artillery dice once or roll for each salamander / razordon ?
 
You roll for all simultaneously, which is darn important with salamanders.

In a unit of 3 salamander you do this:

1st sally - Roll for range, put down template, count hits.
2st sally - Roll for range, put down template, count hits.
3st sally - Roll for range, put down template, count hits.

Then you roll to wound, and THEN you remove models.
 
Okay thanks alot, watch alot youtubers and never saw anybody using mp re than one sally per pack, why is this ?
 
Good question.
Might be one of the following:

- Its easier to move, as single models gets free pivots, thus easier to get a flank shot
- Points: while they are perfectly good and worth their points they will get expensive really quick.
- More points in one target: cannons, template, High strenght fire wont be able to kill more than one salamader, if there is only one salamander.

My reason is usually that I pack a lot of points characters for closecombat punch.
S4 templates arent bad, but I can get plenty S4 through magic :)
I always run them 1 and 1.
 
Related question: Don't they all have to be facing in the same direction, like any other shooting unit would (say a group of skink skirmishers)? Put another way, can the templates ever overlap? Can they ever "cross the streams"?
 
They would face same way because they would be treated as unit and they wouldn't overly because you resolve then seperalty
 
Yes as Jonathan said they need to be facing the same direction. You put down the templates separately so they don't really overlap even though the damage is resolved simultaneously.

Then the tricky part... if you have multiple ranks of salamanders, say 2 x 2 for example. (I'm not saying you should even if you could :D) Can the two on the back rank shoot? You are not allowed to shoot so that there is a chance of hitting your own unit so they cannot shoot directly forward (if you roll a 2 on artillery die the flame would hit the other salamander). Therefore they would only be permitted to shoot at an angle out of the unit. But if you angle the unit atleast the other cannot shoot at the same target which you are required to...

No need to really answer to that question as it was only a rambling and poor written rules essentially. :P

Well can you shoot the template anywhere from front base ? So stagger your skirmishing salamanders? They are skirmishers as a rule not lone character so wouldn't lose skirmishers
 
You cant stagger the skirmishing salamanders as skirmishers have to be set up with 1/2" between each model but otherwise set up in the same way as a normal unit so ranks and files have to sit in-line

Now you have me wondering what that looks like, with rigid half inch spacing. How do you mix in the handlers? and adhere to the half inch spacing?

I don't even know if current issue salamanders are shipping with 40mm or 50mm bases.

I have the old metal salamanders...pretty sure those are on 40mm.
 
They are on 40mm base so they rank up nicely with the 20mm skink handlers in combat. ;)

OK, but what do they look like in Skirmish formation? (Open Order)
 
umm... they are still on 40mm bases ?
and the handlers go behind them somewhere,
(doesn't really matter) *see monsters and handlers rule

Yes you just ignore those handlers, don't rank them up in middle of the formation.

There is another benefit to single Salamanders, You can send Sallies at your opponent from two different directions.

I can think of a few situational cases where I'd want to field Salamanders in larger packs.

-You plan to utilize Tet's vanguards or the spell Walk Between Worlds on Salamanders. It's easier to move a unit of two Sallies with one spell/effect than to move two units of one. Granted, while this is viable. Every unit in our army is hankering for Vanguards and Walk Between Worlds.
-You want more than two Salamanders and you are limited to two duplicate rares
-You are tailoring a list against Elves or some other army with decent BS shooting.

But of all the times I wish I had fielded my Salamanders in larger units, one pro of larger Salamander units outshines the others. (it's not even to make me want to stop fielding solos, but it's a close call)

-To avoid chain reaction panic tests when your solo Salamander gets wiped out by ranged attacks when nearby your Ld 5 and 6 outside of BSB and general range.

Is that what it is called if a salamander explodes like a cannon getting the worst sort of misfire?
Or, is putting priests of slanns in with salamanders a thing?
 
lol, no I'm going fast and loose with terminology.
I think it's technically a misfire.

Ps. IRC characters can't join monsters and handlers.
