In a couple of weeks, I will be playing a game against an experienced player with a Vampire Counts army at 2500 pts. He is a fun opponent who is good at the game. I have read the Tactica about playing VC http://www.lustria-online.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=10538

My opponent has told me that this will be his army list. He is honest (as far as a VC player can be ;) ) so I do not think his list will change.

2 Vamps

40 Grave Guard

60 Skeletons armor/shield and spears

30 Crypt Ghouls

6 Blood Knights

Black Coach

This player loves to run hordes, so we have three hordes of undead with the Blood Nights, Black Coach, and Characters.

Based on the tactica talking about needing combat resolution, my army so far has this. I still have 185 pts. left out of the 2500. Any ideas for what else I should add? I do not know what to do about those Blood Knights. Maybe a Solardon could cause some damage to the Knights, Coach and characters? Is the Ancient Steg a good choice? I have never beaten this player with his High elf or Dwarf army. It would be great to hand him a defeat with the VC.

You're lucky... That should be a fun game. Every VC player I know runs two terrorgheists. :jawdrop: Your list looks like it could stand up pretty well, but you are definitely missing chaff. Two units of skirmishers would definitely give you the oppurtunity to dictate what combats happen for at least a little while and your not left holding the bag when he decides to drop a few skellies for some wolves on a whim. Also have you considered using lore of light? It's a great lore for your saurus and it's excellent against undead and since he's running vamps your slann should dominate the magic phase. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. I have updated my army list to add two units of skirmishers, a few more TG and a couple of low point magic items to fill up the points total to 2500. I will take a look at some different magic lores to see what I run on the Slann.

Use Wandering Deliverations.

Best against VC. It can snipe pretty easily his monster with boosted shems.
Can faily easily his hero and monsters choices with spirit leech. (Ice shard blizzard on his general already grants a +1 in your favour)
Fireball seems quite good to kill their chaff.
and if they field knights you have searing doom to deal with.

In combat the buffs and hexes just tide the battle in your favour.

Just remember VC have very good options to easily kill low size units, like monsters, cavalry , skirmishers , etc.

You should better field the less point cost per wound as you can afford. So you can hide your characters until combat comes.

They have very little good units and they can be handled by magic. The rest is chaff or tarpits. Like Lizardmen, they rely too much in hero & lords to get the job done.

So the trick is minimize your weak points against them and bring some solution to exploit theirs.
