8th Ed. Just how good value is the battleforce now?

When I started thinking about getting a Lizardman army my first thoughts were to get a battleforce and a Slann and build up from there, but since then I have seen more and more reasons why cold one cavalry just don't cut it in 8th, so is it still worth getting the battleforce?

The way I see it is for £50 (or £41 through a discount seller) with a battleforce I get:
20 Saurus
10 Temple Guard
12 Skinks
8 Cold one Cavalry

but buying separately for £56 (or £46 through same seller) I could get:
16 Saurus
10 Temple Guard
24 Skinks

It still seems worse value to me, but I end up with only models that I plan to use, I end up with a few less Saurus, but I was thinking that either way I would buy another box of Saurus and convert a few to bolster the TG squad (I understand I will have a few spare shields, heads and weapons from 10 TG which should be enough to show them as TG and not just saurus). From a logical standpoint im leaning towards buying separately, but I have always liked the imagry of cold one cavalry... what does everyone else think about this?
 
very good question, and a thread im keen to follow. i am in a very similiar position.

i rele like the look of the cav, however im not sure how effective they will b with I2.

ill keep an eye out on this!

i still believe it to be a good buy.

every model will be useful and if you ever want to play COC you can.

on top of that, you get to convert one of your riders to a scar-vet on a cold one. i know i have one scar-vet on a cold one and another scar-vet on cold one as a bsb. but i think one box is good enough and build on from there. you will want salamanders, at least 2 or 3. get more saurus warriors and skinks. consider getting kroxigors to buff up the skinks in a skrox unit. and plan on chameleon skinks in your whole plan of an army because they will come in handy with the new scout rules.
 
I just noticed I've got 40k on the brain, think everyone knows battleforce = batallion tho...

I'm initially trying to do the army on a budget, I was thinking about converting some skinks to chameleon skinks. I'm not hugely impressed with the metal models for the price, I think with some greenstuff and perhaps salt dipping I could convert them adequately and with camo paint scheme it should be convincing. So either of the options above with a box of saurus, skinks if I go for the battleforce and a slann should give me a good start. I know it would be a 1500 list if I go with cold one cavalry not sure if it would be enough with the other option.

Since I'm on a budget I'm warey about salamanders and kroxigors since they cost a lot of £ for points, I believe I can have a playable and competitive list without them.

I think I'm gonna go with WaylandGames instead, I save about 20% on RRP without the risks of ebay (had some dodgy items in the past and took months to resolve)

No really, please do.

As far as the battalion goes I find it good in value. You get heaps of bits from all of the sprues (including banners) and nice models to boot. Except for cold ones of course, they're (imo) awfully ugly.

The I2 of Cold one cavalry doesn't really set them back all that much, unless you charge headfirst into a block of swordmasters (or something equally stupid) in which case you're doing something very, very wrong.
They're not the same hammer they used to be, but they still deliver a hard blow. I reckon they're good at flanking, even if they don't negate the rank bonus.
Multi-charge with them, bunch them up with Saurus going for the front (or flank if possible!) and then jump at them with Cold ones. (front charge is perfectly valid if you've flanked the unit already, but still getting them on the flank reduces incoming attacks)

I don't trust the FleeBay either. But it's worth a shot, and if you're in doubt you can always ask around. You occasionally get the odd deal that took 6months to get your part delivered, but it's worth it in the end.

Nothing dodgy about salt dipping, basically you heat some salt, the best way to do this is using a saucepan that noone cares about with a tin or metal container inside it filled with salt, put it on the hob at a medium-high heat. When the salt is up to temperature you just stick part of a model into the salt for a while then remove it and gently bend it into the desired position. Before you do it with a proper model tho test it using sprue or bits you'll never want, you want to get the plastic so it's just pliable enough to bend otherwise you'll lose some of the detail on the model if the plastic gets too soft. At first I thought this was over the top and was worried it would ruin any details on the model, but its a really easy way to reposition arms or legs without having to hack it apart and greenstuff it back together.
 
The cold ones are still nasty and even at the lower In take a huge toll on the enemy. Mine took out 40 clan rats and 20 plague monks (who were in my flank) while only taking 3 wounds back, 2 from the weird strength wound no armour weapon.

Hmmm, sounds interesting! Seeing as I have a LOT of converting to do (I don't like my Saurus leaning forwards, I want them to be standing up to look like 8 foot killing machines) that would come in very handy! Any website with more detailed instructions or other similar things that I can do?

As for the value, if you buy the Battalion set remember that you can always sell off your Cold one Cavalry once you have the box. I don't know how well that would work in your area but Lizardmen sell really well here where I live.. Or maybe even trade with someone to get your higher costing models such as a Salamander or Kroxigor.. Trust me, Salamanders are just a little too sexy to pass up with these new rules ;) People avoided them before but now they will utterly HATE them!
 
As I just bought 2 battalions, a slann, a skink box and 2 salamanders, I think its not a bad deal myself.

My justification for it-I plan on taking some of the Cold one cav and converting the cold ones into kroxigor and a counts as terradon that looks like a archeopteryx.
