Right, he sounds like a nightmare! WFB doesn't really work in the same way. As a rule, the special characters are overpriced but there are still a few to watch out for, Teclis the High Elf, for example.
There is still a point-filler/elite fighter spectrum but that's usually just the difference between core troops and special troops. Each army will have a few vicious, elite troops that you have to watch out for, surrounded by a few weaker core units. There are far too many combinations to 'watch out for' but you can still prepare yourself for any eventuality by constructing a balanced list. You should have 'anvil' units who can take a charge and hold an enemy unit in place (saurus, large Skrox units, temple-guard etc) and 'hammer' units to deal a fatal blow or side-charge (Cold Ones, Kroxigor, etc) to rack up the CR points. Scouts and Skirmishers can hassle the opponent, take on war machines and divert the enemy by setting up screens, these are your skinks, chameleons and terradons. Try to have some magic (Slann, Priest), and throw in a few nasty monsters for good measure (Stegaonds, Salamanders, Razordons), and you're done.
