8th Ed. is Tehenhuin worth it?

I made a list with him. Figured it would be fun and he's cheaper than the old frog. Then I looked again. I never leave home without a scroll, so I need a caddy for that, which brings the total cost to roughly 300pts.

A naked slann with scroll might be a tiny bit more expensive, but then you get one more wizard level, 2 more wounds, a better toughness and superior ward save.

I dont mind running a naked slann.

Obviously tehenhuin is superior in CC, but ye doesnt bring that many goodies besides that. At least tetto'eko brings something more.

Thoughts?

I feel hes kinda on the edge, too expensive imo.

Comparing his magic powers he's far inferior to Tetto'ekko whos also cheaper.
His figthing skills are ok but then again we have out scarvets to do just better.

I would only take Tehenhuin in a themed list or if I really want to max out on Beast magic (because I run a list with lots of characters for example).


Besides, I love the model and the fluff!

If you like swarms he's pretty good, as a wizard he works well, beasts is a lore that works nicely pretty much irrespective of how many spell picks you get, and lets face it, even if you do take a Slann you still bring that skink priest for arcane vassal and overcoming the pred fighter downside.

Personally I like him, but I know not everyone shares that view.

Sticking him in a unit that cannot flee, and cannot have a unit champ to soak a challenge usually results in a dead Tenenhuin.

While he sucks less in combat that a skink chief, he still sucks. 230 points is kind of a lot for a level 3 wizard with no options for gear.

My problem with him is he's your lord slot and a generalist. It would be like fielding a vampire lord as a level 3 wizard, with no gear or bloodlines. You've got better options to cast (slaan) or fight (oldblood), but instead you take a guy who's half-assing both those jobs.

Fluff-wise I like him.
The model I like too.
I'm just bummed he is so mediocre. Underpowered wizard and non-survivable warrior.

Maybe 8th edition will improve lore of beast and he'll become more viable.

Not really any such thing as an underpowered wizard in 8th edition, and I've found lore of beasts very useful, espescially on a character who's good enough in combat to benefit from savage beast or wildform, and can utilise the nuclear option of transformation of Kadon. My own experiences using him with a pair of level two skink priests as back up have been nearly all positive-he's not quite as good a spellcaster as a slann, but he's *much* less of a liability-sits on the side of saurus units so miscasts do less damage, doesn't displace four models from fighting ranks, and at his lower points cost it's not too much of a disaster if he doesn't make it to the final turn, which is a particular relief after so many games having to go to great efforts to protect a mostly defenceless slann mage priest.
