7th Ed. How many Power dice is too many

I'm one of those Funny people who wants both myself and my opponent to have fun - now I like building armies around certain aspects (like speed or resilience etc). How many powerdice would be to much ?


I was thinking Pimped out slann with All the disciplines that make your a better caster
lvl 2 Skink Priest on Engine of the gods with the Diadem of Power
Maby another 1-2 Skink Priests lvl 2.

I was thinking to completely Forget ranged shooting units and then use your Magic as your offence - The slann as a Utility mage (healer, Defence etc) and the skinks as Lightning throwing little dudes. Would you enjoy playing a army like this ? Or is Just beardy cheese ?

What do you guys think ?

I don't find most magic overpowered, only a few lores like undead and Skaven can be really really deadly if they max out on it. Most of the time it is a bit risky due to miscasts, the damage isn't huge, and you don't get off all the spells you try. Definitely not overpowered if you have no shooting.

A Slann and engine would be fine, maybe even a second support skink. If you are using the Slann mostly defensively and only throwing lightning even more so, since that won't harm too much of the opponent army.

I agree. Most Lores are not overpowered by themselves, but every Lore has at least one spell that can be very abusive and/or dangerous. Spammable ION, Infernal Gateway, Pit of Shades (if you're a Slann), Conflageration of Doom, Vanhaul's Unmaking, etc. So while most opponents won't mind 12 PD if you are only hurling Fireballs but if you start casting the Comet of Cassandora every turn with 2+ mages, that can get old. Remember that even with 10 PD, a Slann lead magic phase is worse because he could unleash as much as 12 PD by himself with the +1 PD enhancement (meaning at least 19 PD with EoTG). Personally, my lists have topped off at 10 PD so I don't wear my opponent down so much and he has fun, too. This allows me to field a greater varity of troops as well, to help counter some of the inherent weaknesses that a full magic army presents. Also keep in mind, that once your opponent reaches melee with you (which can be turn two with some armies!), it inhibits a lot of your magic protential. Just a thought.

obviously there's a point where you've spent too many points on magic and not enough core. in my army i have only 7 PD . . . . . . . but 60 saurus, because i know i can use my saurus without fail, but with magic there's always miscast s

My first army being dwarves, you'd think I would be itching to try a magic heavy army. But while playing dwarves I noticed that there was a big advantage to going magic light. The enemy would often invest in a lot of magic defense (sometimes an obscene amount) and those were just wasted points against dwarves. One time I played another dwarf player who had geared himself to go anti-VC and had about 150 points of anti magic. Didn't end well for him!

It just came down to the fact that magic was one of those all or nothing type phases, because if you go too light people will shut you down. Also the urge for more mobility drove me to avoid the big slann unit. It was too similar to dwarves... big tough infantry with good ranged attacking. Not knocking magic, it just varies greatly in usefulness between games or so it seems to me. I'm sure I'll buy a Slann + TG some day though.

The two main reasons I picked lizzies where:

No armor - all scales and bodies.

Magic - slann being the masters of it, 40K aint got a Magic phase, and I wanted something besides normal battles - lizzies where my choice (f*ggy elves a close second).

I love going Heavy magic (even heavy magic I always have 60+ Infantry), busting out a spell, and another, and another and another till my opponent goes WTF!, If even one cool spell (like conflagaration of DOOOOM) goes through, then I'm happy. I like flashy large effects. (lvl2 skink Priest casting comet of cassandora on a dwarf army, them failing their dispels every turn for 5 turns, the comet hitting and wiping both myself and my opponents army off the table when I rolled 5 6's for range). Makes for memorable games

A few questions you need to ask yourself:

1) Would your opponents enjoy playing against an army like this?

2) Would you enjoy playing against and army like this?

3) How many power dice do most armies in your area usually have?

Well most armies in my Area are either high elves, dark elves or Tzeentch Daemons - so they all have respectable Magic Phases (darn that drain Magic spell).

A point that talmon made is quite good and valid, different areas have different standards for what is good and what isn't, and different areas find different units work better or worse. You are at an advantage here with your question about what level of magic is acceptable; most of your opponents carry a strong magic phase too. Base your magic list on the amount of magic they have, aim for a touch higher if you want but don't go too much higher, and take into consideration how well most of your group does against the magic heavy armies and how well they might do against yours.

Another important point is that the 8 lores of magic are not as powerful as DE magic, or Tzeench magic, and possibly even High magic. You may have more spells, but find that your list is on par due to their magic lores being superior.

i played a game against DoC and WoC
4 2k armies,
in my 2k army i had,

slann - 4 dice -plus 1 extra when casting
EOTG - 3 dice
SP - 2 dice
SP - 2 dice
2 dice for our side,( agreed for side instead of army at start)
my ally who was empire has 4 dice in total,



and that wasnt to many had a fun game
put it was a khorne DOC so that might have been why it wasnt unfair
