8th Ed. How important is magic?

In large, 2000+ points games, Lizardmen get the Slann, so magic is very important in that case because it can have a substanial effect. However, do I really need a skink priest in a small points battle?

I'm thinking of taking a Scar Veteran on Cold One, along with 2 x 20 Saurus, 10 Skinks, and a Salamander - but do you think that magic will be able to decimate my army because I have no magic defence?

Also, I have 150 points to spend on my Scar Veteran - he must be on a Cold One, so that leaves me with 45 points left to spend on wargear and magic items. What should I give him? Gold Sigil Sword, glittering scales, shield?
 
you get as many powerdice in small games as you do in big games, so its a shame not to use them. a single skink lvl 2 with ruby ring and/or dispell scroll /diadem of power /plaque of tepoc will never be a bad buy. if anything leave the scar vet at home. he is a good character, but all he does is add a bit of combat punch, and simply buying more units will give you a better mileage than that. you cant replace a wizard with more sauruses though, they simply dont do the same thing.
 
I could have a Skink Priest at Level 2 with Plaque of Tepok/DIadem of Power. However, I am concerned about ethereals. Magic seems a bit unreliable. I was thinking of a lone cold one Scar vet, for the opponent, its him or 40 Saurus to face.

If I were to use magic, I'd go for two skink priests, one with plaque of tepok. Two channel dice as well.

you are just wasting points with the second priest tbh. give your priest either plaque of tepoc, dispel scroll, or diadem as you see fit, but get the ruby ring. then you are guaranteed a spell that will cause magical and flaming attacks, thus helping both with ethereals and regeneration. you shouldnt have too many of either of those on the opposite side when playing such small games. d6 S4 hits will be a power to reckon with.
 
Skink Priest, Level 2, Diadem of Power, Ruby Ring of Ruin = 150 points.

Provides magical offense and defence. If ethereals turn up, they, hopefully, die. And I only need 3+ to cast it.
