8th Ed. How do you run your Kroxigor?

I've just grabbed 6 of the bad boys. Im gonna try them in a unit by themselves, and in skinks. But as a kroxigor newbie, How do you play them? Are they a replacement for a squad of saurus?

Give me your ideas on them and let me know how to run them :D
 
Think of them as light calvary...
 
I have yet to run them solo. I always take 3 kroxigors in a unit of about 40+ skinks. In higher point games, I may even go as high as 65 skinks with 3 kroxigors. I use those units instead of saurus. Using lore of Light or Lore of Life to buff them up (decreasing the squishyness of the T2 skinks).

I like that the unit is movement 6 and causes fear.
 
I usually run mine solo, in a group of 6-8. Never had much success with the mixed skink/krox unit, skinks just die too quickly in close combat. Tho *If* you can buff the unit with extra toughness from Lore of Life, I imagine they'd do ok...
 
I was talking it over with an ogre player who is a friend of mine, he was reeling at the thought of them costing 55points each, Untill I mentioned that they were S6 and had a 4+ save

I like the idea of 6 of them with a champ stomping around with 12" movement. Using them as light cav is a great way to think of them actually!

So arli, you think they can replace a unit of saurus? With skinks being so squishy unless buffed. I think they'd be a dedicated flanking unit. Taking someone head on with them seems suicide :P

But I like the idea of 6 running by themselves kicking in peeps :D
 
I almost exclusively take skrox units. There is a unit of TG usually in there as well. I flank the TG unit with two units of skrox. Best case (in large games), I shoot for the entire core made up from skrox units. Ideally, I want 3 krox and about 40-45 skinks. Horde formation on one unit and 8 wide on the other unit.

I am not afraid to run these units into something if need be. Lore of life will keep them buffed (or Light).
 
So the kroxigors in the unit with skinks count towards the total points cost of core? Or as an upgrade that is a special troop do they take up special points cost?

Either way, I'm painting them now and gonna field them when I've finished :P
 
They count towards the core requirement. In my opinion, they are well worth the points. I always have my TG to run into the front of almost any unit.

Another thing that is fun to do is to get Birona's timewarp off on the skrox unit and then charge them 2d6 +10 inches. When it works, it is a thing of beauty!
 
running them with skinks has worked out pretty well for me sometimes, but only add one or two per skink unit so that it adds fear and four attack!

try them out and see what happens

Am I missing something here? In the army book, it says Krox are S4... not S6 (which to me makes no sense since these are much larger creatures than Saurus)
 
Strength 4 with great weps :P So S6 striking last.

As odd as it is I tend to look at Kroxigor as a unit upgrade. You get +1 leadership and fear to the unit plus the damage potential for fairly cheep. You also only loose out on one models worth of Steadfast ranks. Ld 7, 3D6, steadfast unit is very annoying to the opponent.
 
and keep in mind that the kroxigors in a mixed unit can't be attacked until the kroxigors have to step up due to skink casualties (or get flanked and all the skinks in additional ranks are gone, etc.).

What's more, a skrox unit can't be stomped/thunderstomped either.

So you end up with a unit where your heavy hitters can't be hit in the first (or usually second and third) close combat phase that, can shoot or stand-and-shoot with quick to fire poison attacks, is LD7, has 3-12 (or more if you're really crazy) S6 attacks, and can't be stomped.

Now imagine that unit with Glittering Robe (5+ Scaly Skin), Flesh to Stone (+2/+4 Toughness), or Okkam's Mindrazor (all attacks at S6 or S7).
 
Don't forget that because the unit is a mixed unit, the dreaded 13th spell cannot be used against them. Kracks call still sucks though!
 
...and are immune to/cause fear. Skrox can great units unless you roll horribly (like i tend to).
 
I would like to run the skrox unit but i`m not sure what is good, small or big units.
Small like 11 skinks with 1 krox, or big with 2 or 3 kroxigors.
Also is it wise to use musicians and standards?
 
Benny, you have really sold krox to me! I had no idea they couldnt be stomped!

And with the skink shooting from the unit, they can stand and shoot from any range, so krox are perfect marchblocker units by the sounds of it :D

Krox got a major nerf in the last book, they used to be Str5 with GW so counting as Str7. The extra points are for cold blooded, they are overpriced compared to their nearest equivalents (I admit they were probably underpriced in the last book). Previous book armies were filled with Krox and COR with no saurus, this book lost the Krox and COR and replaced them with Steggies, the new edition brought out the saurus and big TG units.

If you're going to use them as march blockers, then I'd probably run them in small sized units of 10 or 12 skinks with a single Kroxigor (105 or 115 points if no command group), but if you're planning to run them as flanking units, then I typically run them in units of 22 skinks and 2 Kroxigors with FC (224 points).

I've actually been toying with the idea of running a bunch of those tiny units just to see what happens (and my opponent's reaction). I think I'd get slaughtered, but it would be fun to see a bunch of Skrox units zipping across the board and in close combat with everything by the end of Round 2 (if not sooner).

Just remember that Skinks are really, really good at dying.
