8th Ed. Great weapon and shield on saurus lord/hero?

Hi! I'm newish to playing table top, and got hit with a question last time when equiping my saurus scar-vet. I googled some on it and searched on the website, but couldn't find the answer.

Can a saurus scar-vet or oldblood take a great weapon and a shield? As great weapon is a two-handed weapon. I was thinking of how the temple guard can handle halberds and shields. So why wouldn't the scar-vet and oldblood be able to take that combo? But... Seeing how a great weapon is even heavier than a halberd, are they able to combine that with a shield?

Any pointers from more experienced players?

When a model uses a two-handed weapon (great weapon, halberd, flail, etc.) in close combat, they don't get to use their shield. However, outside of combat (magic and shooting) they still benefit from the shield. In the case of the Temple Guard you mentioned, they have a 4+ save in close combat and a 3+ save outside of close combat.

The only thing I'd like to highlight is that you should also re-look at the "Look Out Sir" rules, as if your character is already in a unit that is the same troop type then you get additional protection.
