7th Ed. first box. skinks or sauruses

im starting a new army and im going to buy a skink priest on foot and a box of skinks or a old blood and a box of sauruses... what should i buy

Saurus are cooler, but admitedly don't make it into everyone's list. You may end up liking the idea of an all skink army. If not, go for saurus. But if you think that is possible, the skinks are safer and sure to be used in every list.

I would hold off on the blisters for a bit too. A lot of people don't use an old blood on foot, and you can get a skink priest in the stegadon kit.

i do like the idea of an all skink army but to me there isnt much depth to the army, if i was doing a scouting force id do all skinks... plus i dont muck like the look of the priest from the stegadon and i dont like mounted sauruses.

I actually bought 2 boxes of skinks first for core choices. I only collect armies based on which models I like and want to paint. I wasnt too sure about the saurus yet, but I decided I like them enough to buy a box. I also try to avoid metal models (except for characters and some select monsters) as I absolutely cannot stand having to glue broken painted metal models. I have totally avoided the terradons and im still unsure about the kroxigors. Salamanders are no problem as long as the neck gets a pin.

I actually assembled the carnosaur today and pinned his tail and both hind legs.
I dunno thats just me though im a freak about my models because I put so much effort into painting them.
Id go with the skinks though.

I'm pretty sure I pinned every joint on my carnosaur - I really do not want him falling apart. If you pin models, they almost never break. Metals are also a pain to paint though, I find the paint chips easily or even rubs off.

@gary, well like the post above me says, buy the models that you like best first, no worries if you don't like the steg priest pick the model you like the look of. So what do you like the look of better; skinks or saurus?

why dont you give the whole thing a coat of matt varnish. all my favourite modle that i dont want to be scratch i put a coat on.

Just use a good primer, the GW stuff is expensive but it does seem to work.

I like the new kroxigors, they look really good, and like most scaly models, dry brushing them makes it work out pretty well without too many problems. The key I found to metal models, is to use some kind of epoxy or cement rather then normal GW modeling glue, metal models mostly bend instead of break, but when they do break then.... it's a pain.

Yeah GW primer works fine, just be careful spraying too heavily or closely or you'll obscure detail.

As for metals I've had no problems, but I do use a padded carrying case and do two layers of varnish: two layers of gloss painted on (it's much harder and more resilient than matte) and then a layer of matte sprayed on (gets rid of the glossyness). Of course you have to be double careful when spraying varnish cause it can fog (not happened to me yet) if too humid or cold. With three thin layers of varnish I've had no trouble dropping my models, though if I threw them about I'm sure some paint would chip. I'd imagine rubbing would be the main danger to paint really.
