8th Ed. EtoG?

Is this worth bringing ? I usually run an ancient or regular steg at 2.5k against beastmen I'm not sure if the EtoG would be worth it what do you think?

I just used EotG in a game against Chaos Warriors and it was quite helpful with its 5+ ward save. I will look at taking it again in the future as that ward save allowed units of Skinks to save enough wounds to stick around and hold up much larger units.

That said, once I went into HtH combat I found the Ancient Stegadon to be completely underwhelming in combat. Especially for his points. When you look at the DE War Hydra its like 100 points cheaper and has a lot more offensive capability.

Agreed. Especially with the 2nd half. The Hydra also seems to have more survivability.

I find the engine to be a waste of points. Its too easy pick the priest off the top and I just dont find the abilities to be worth it. Maybe if I tailor a list specifically for demons.

If the priest still got the free lvl 3 upgrade instead of just +1 to cast and dispel I would take it.

As others have said the ancient is a little under whelming in combat. It relies heavily on the impact hits and thunderstomp, and if you get poor rolls with these its probably going to lose combat. Good thing it is stubborn.

Don't compare stuff to the hydra since its a completely broken monster, especially pointwise...

Taking the DE War Hydra out of the equation if you look at the various other Monstrous Rares out there the Stegadon is the third highest in points value behind the Steamtank, and Aracharok. the EoTG/Ancient Stegadon is still a little over priced for what it brings, at least in comparison to other armies. TB Necrosphinx for example is 225 points, as is a giant and while costing a mere 15 points more the aracharok has a higher WS and T8 with 8 wounds.

Don't listen to these people, the EotG is a monster. Sure, people can pick off monstrous creatures, but if you live by those rules you'll just have a stupid boring infantry army. Bring those monsters! Then bring things to kill cannons ahead of time!

Anyway, so the EotG
Lore of the heavens can be devastating, I put in the extra points for lvl 2 and Plaque of Topek. If you're shy on points you can skip the lvl 2 since Plaque is cheaper. This gives you the best chance for Chain Lightning and Comet. In addition, if you take Itzi Grubs instead of the Plaque you can add 7 to a casting attempt if you really need it to happen. +2 for lvl 2 priest, -1 for Arcane Configuration, +1 for EotG, and +3 for the grubs.

Now for the lackluster combat as everyone puts it.
The Burning Alignment puts d6 st4 hits on EVERY enemy unit, even in close combat within 2d6," which can seriously add up.
Add to that d6+1 impact hits on the charge, 3+crew attacks, and an additional d6 auto-hits with the thunder stomp. That's an average of about 10 hits per turn, plus whatever burning alignment gets you, which will escalate as the armies clash together.

Ideally you'd run him a little behind your saurus blocks, then ram the stegadon into a flanking maneuver.

It's devastating, and it's fun.

To keep your poor priest alive longer than 5 seconds in close combat though, you need to give him some defense. A dawnstone or luckstone are pretty good as he has 2+ armor save from the steggie (though beware high strength troops).

Same here man. Stegadons are probably one of my favorite looking models in the entire WHFB. So I do play them often in non-league/tournament matches. But just like you said...even the priest is squishy and will die once in CC almost immediately. So give him defense items? That makes the EoTG package even MORE expensive. Making it's value/points it brings even worse.

I'm sorry, I love the model as much as everyone else. But it's cost just doesn't justify what it does in CC still IMO. Lets say you give a Priest the EoTG Steg + Dispel Scroll + L2. That's 415 points...30 Saurus Warrior block is still cheaper with FC (360 pts) and probably will bring more hurt and threat to the table.

Agreed that is why I tend to give him a luckstone if short on pts. 5 pts and hopefully that one armor reroll is enough to keep him alive in cc at least one more turn. Even 25 pts for a dawnstone doesn't really make him that much more expensive. Also helps if you avoid high strength units with the EOTG so that your 2+ armor save is all there to save you.

Also remember that your opponent needs to kill the whole model (priest and steggie) to get the VP of that EOTG. So those points are harder to get than they appear.

I really like the EoTG myself, it IS handy and has many good uses. my beef is that for its points its not as potent as some other armies Rare-Monster options and also you can take a huge saurus block as well for the points. If it was left as it is stat and ability wise I would prefer to see the Stegadon cost more like 230-240 point wise. A vanilla Giant is 235 and likely more reliable to get his points back.

Ok I have 1 and always try tp use him and hopefully you'll see why.here are my thoughts on EOTG's. and im aware some points will have been mentioned already but read through anyway.
Firstly 5+ward against shooting. defo a good thing to have against alot of armies as there are not many armies without shooting and too many with alot.
on that turn you get alot of power dice and need few spells off you can decrease casting cost to maximise magic phase.
and of course burning alignent kills stuff...killing stuff is always good and the opponent can do nothing about any of these things once they go off except hope for the best.
its hard hitting...simple but true....it kills things without the above added bonuses and even has a few skink crew to keep it company along the way aswell as a great armour save for all.
and it has a priest on top people worry about dieing fro ma strong hit. talisman of preservation will ensure long durability and the opponent spending either way too much of the army to get rid of it or too much time or both,
Lastly people keep comparing it to other monsters like the giant etc. now seens as people are comparing the eotg all together and its points i will do the same.
the model casts spells, dispells spells, has ranged protection, ranged attacks, good movement toughness stregnth wounds etc, bigger points denial if played well and more reliable.
comparing it to the cheaper giant it doesnt fall over attack randomly alot of the time not doing much damage and will do what you tell it too most of the time (within reason) oh and 1 thing i did forget to mention....not only does it give character and crew a stupidly cool 2+ armour save but it also has a 3+ armour save itself....the giant weres really big trousers and odd jewelry. doesnt need to be said but i will say it...NO SAVES
in regards to the message above...dont forget our steggies are cheaper...they are 235 and 275...the eotg is a little more so you will pay more.
oh and as mentioned its soooo cool a model. especially when painted with an onix circly bit on the top with gold plating...dont look too shabby if i do say so myself. goes well with my onix and goldplated palanquin slann

First I just wanted to say that Warhammer Fantasy Battle is a TACTICAL game, not a Deathmach game "Steg/EotG vs Hydra" The EotG is Absolutely brilliant, why? Because there is an Army that will support him, Your cham skinks and Terradons will eliminate his Cannons (exept the Ironblaster ofc) Your Slann will heal him or Buff his T up to 10 or teleport him Via Steed of Shadows behind Enemy lines. The EotG isin't for front charges but for supporting charge/flank/rear charge. You Don't Charge a unit of Chosen with 3+ ward thats obvious but you can charge a unit of 18 Khorne Warriors and win easilly. I give my priest Dawnstone(2+ with rerolls should be enough) and Plaque of Tepok, giving me 3 spells, So i can cast -1 to hit on to the warrios, or reroll 6's or reroll 1's on me, plus i have Burning Aligment(too bad that you have to use EotG at the start of Your magic phase otherwise, Steed of Shados +BA = Sudden death
Here is a little Math Hammer i made. Front charge vs Frenzied Nurgle Chaos Warrios:
- impact hits 3.75 killed
- skinks 0.28 killed
- stegadon 0.83 killed
- thunderstomp 2.92 killed
- Burning aligment 1.5 killed
The Warriors have 16 attacks, they Can kill 4.44 Skink or 2.3 W on the Steg, Or try to kill a 2+ with reroll AS Skink preist that allready used the EotG. So they Attack skinks to buff thier CR and stay, they Kill 4.
Steg 8 kills+Charge Warriors 4 kills+standard. Warriorz breake with -4

unless... the warriors still have at least one rank (not one rank BONUS), becaus ethen they will be steadfast at Ld 8-10 depending on general and so on

ps. i like the engine too, but i very rarely use it.

Many players like to bring "apprentice" wizards in their lists, for the extra depth in the magic phase and the option of another arcane item, typically a Dispel Scroll.

The EotG lets you do that in a very effective way. Sure its expensive but if you look at it as a Skink Priest and an Ancient Stegadon seperatly, you score some very powerful bonuses for almost no points. Seing as how the Cupped Hands is probably the best and most popular magic item in the Lizardmen book, it makes sense to bring a Priest to carry a Scroll/Cube of Darkness.

The only real drawback of the Engine imo, is that it cuts deep into your hero allowance.

In my expirience EoTG is a must have, aside from the devasting stegadon and skink throwing thunderbolts at will i've found that there is a certain pshychological factor when i play him, opponent is always in constant fear, for example a unit of chaos knghts fears to go in where the action is becasue eotg would tear them appart and not even slamming into cc can save them. Another example is an empire not shooting at my two stegadons becasue of 5 plus wardm can you imagine the smile on my face? Offcourse it doesnt always happen and from time to time they will be blasted into pieces by some long range artillery but in my expirience, totally worth it
