7th Ed. Combat vs Magic?

I'm kinda in a pinch here.

I really don't know what to use anymore.
Heavy Magic or Full Combat.

Neither of both really served me well.

And I would like to know what you guys use.
Combat with some magic defence?
Or Heavy Magic with some blocks?

I've tried both. Slann with TG, some shooting and blocks but I find magic too unreliable as slann can now miscast.

Then I tried heavy combat with a Oldblood on Carnosaur but that didn't proof to be much better.
Or he got shot down or magicked to death. Or he was hold off by blocks and later destroyed by flank charges.
I don't find our combat so incredible. Stega's are only units that can really put a punch. But my opponents now just flee if they can when they get charged by a stegadon. Or they know the stega will get killed by their unit.(Assasin or elite inf).
Most of the times my saurus just get killed. Either in close combat or by shooting or other magic.

If you don't like going too heavy on either, then try a balanced army. Take neither a Slann or a carnosaur, in fact I would lean away from an Old Blood entirely in a balanced list if you couldn't find something specific for him to do.

i've had luck with an oldbloood in a unit of saurus or cold one unit his extra attacks can often make cold one units really scary as hammer units but if going combat heavy you still need some magic def at least one priest with scrolls

Perhaps an Oldblood with an EotG and a couple on-foot Shamans as well.

I had the same issues. I was on a major winning streak in my local area with my lizards until the new book came out. Now all the stuff I loved and relied on was removed. I ran an all combat army with one priest with diadem and marked my spear saurus (thats right i used them with only 1 attack) tepok. I generated 9 dd with diadem, and ran 2 stegs (no cheese salamanders) I was thinking wow if I can beat demons and VC with the old book what am I going to be like when the new book comes out. Well my friends I was ass! Total and 100% They took away all my beautiful DD with out investing points in crappy T2 skink priests.

So after shelfing my lizards for high elfs and doing some serious math hammer. I came to what was for me the obvious solution.......

THE SKINK ARMY OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!

that's right if your going to be toughness 2 then you might as well have a T6 piece of bad ass tucked underneath you.

Now I am winning again. However GW basically made me buy a new army. So I have some serious nicely painted saurus with spears, an old blood on a carny, collecting dust.

I run a chief on ancient, 2 engines, a on foot bsb. 2 reg stegs, 1 unit chams, 1 unit teradons, 2 sals, 2 razordons, and the rest is pure skink evilness.

Thats right 5 stegs. Let me tell you they are not nearly as scary as people think thats why you need a min 4 of them if you want to use them effectively. Hell if anything charges an engine, that skink on top is dead. My opponents realize this and are constantly throwing a hero at them solo, kill the skink on top engine goes down. Thats why i have 2 of them, now instead of 2 engines I just have a T6 s6 impact hitting beast for you to deal with.

down with the old bloods, down with the slann! Long live the skinks of Sotek!

Oh and if you lose a game, hey my army is T2, i should lose

Hardly - You don't really need a skink army of DOOOOM to get magic defence. heck you can even avoid the T2 squishy wizards.

Engine of the Gods with lvl2 skink Priest + Diadem of power. Plenty of magic defence for most armies. However I play a fairly Infantry heavy army - My slann and Skink Priest Bring the Magic, my 60+ infantry and other units bring the muscle.

Just how many skinks do you manage to fit into an army that already has 5 stegadons, terradons, both razordons and salamander, and chams? (Charmelion skinks?)

Admitedly I threw some saurus into my army, but could hardly find spare points for anything.

well ya I guess I should of posted my points limit. Thats my army for large engagements just under 3000 points. I play friends at 2750 or 2500. We don't play at 3000 because the dual lord choices gets a little ridiculous. TBH I was just rattling off my units I use and just finished a big 2750 game where i crushed my buddies WoC.

How ever I have a large tourney in my area comming up. This is the 2250 tourney list I am going to use. I am going to be playing it alot over the next 4 weeks to prep myself.

however this isn't an army list thread. But I thought I'd send some love out to another player having trouble with magic and combat.

I swing one way or the other. I don't feel comfortable having a balanced army. I feel as though it won't excel at anything, that it's just average. But that is my train of thought anyway...

My army is a combat heavy Sarus army, focusing on an Old-blood on Carnosaur and blocks of Saurus and SCoRs.

I'm currently building a skink army that focuses on ranged combat and jungle monsters. This one has a light magical artillery but only to keep enemy Wizards at bay.

I eventually want to make a magic heavy army but thats still in the dream works.

I don't really like mix and matching my armies fpr some reason...

you see i have the oposite luck ,


i have never lost a battle with my old blood on carny
and ive only lost him on one occasion(killing blowed of his carny)

i stick him with a unit of 8 saurus cold one cav,

apart from that i use 1 eotg and at a Stretch a cheap skink priest on terradon with sword of might

i think the main problem with lizardmen know is its to east to go herohammer
i mean my 2 leaders cost me around 750 points,


another thing ive found that works well is 2 scarvets and 2 S.Priests
i use this in my mass inf army (100 saurs warriors and 60 skinks as core )
the scar vets give me the extra little kick in a unit and ive found that no matter how hard a enemy charater is,
there not going to survise combat with 2 units of saurs backed up by a scar vet,

i had a game againt DOC and my unit of 25 saurus with spears managed to hold for 3 turns against a bloodthirster by this point id nearly delt with the rest of his army

i learnt something about bloodcrushers in that gane as well, they don't like being charged by 2 stegadons



to be honest lizardmen work in a wide variety of ways now,
depending on your playing style and to a certain extent you skill and planning it will effect what type of army will work for you.

My opponents till now only cry: "I hate magic". Before the new armybook i never went magic heavy. Now with the new book and a Slann that can walk about on his own (well protected with Disciplines) i do go Magic Heavy. And i must say it is not dissapointing at all.

And no, i am not a powerplayer. When i go with Bretonnian 2000 points, i take 100 Men at Arms with me, not just Knights.
