8th Ed. Cold one cavalry?

Hello again

So by mistake, fate or the best laid plans of mice and/or the old ones I wound up with 16 Cold one cavalry models. While this is far to many and im planning on selling the extra box, im planning on using the first 8 as part of my regular army. I normaly fight versus skaven and VC.

I know that they are a bit steep pointswise, but having consulted the chart in the CoC FAQ section, I noticed that they can do some considerable damage versus WS3/T3 oppononts, which is pretty much what skaven and undead are all about. Just wanted to know what others have experienced while using CoC in their own games and wether they find that fielding them is worth the hassle, and if perhaps there are any suggestions on sneaky useage of the stupid (literally) fellows out there?

You could run them with a scar-vet with the crown of command and the +1 leadership banner.. so you'd have a stubborn flanker unit that could grind decently in the flanks or rear of big units. Just watch out for artillery.

Depending on your points you can run them the same way I have been with great success.
I know they can be a pretty big point sink but when matched up right they are devastating.

This is how I run them in 2000 – 2400 and they have pretty consistently earned their points back for me.

Gamblers Armor (This gives him heavy armor for the 1+ save and the 6+ Ward)
Sword of Might (gives him 5 S6 attacks)

Banner of Discipline +1 LD (forgot what it is called)
They will almost never be stupid or break. And will generally mow down just about anything.

Well, i'll look into converting the chmapion into a Scar veteran and run him along those lines then. Now to figure out a color scheme for the cold ones.

CoC are grossly under rated by many people. It's true they are a bit steep in the points area but you can't beat putting that unit on the flank of infantry and blow through with a devistating amount of attacks and living to tell the tale with their decent 2+ armour.

I generally specialize my units for either monster or unit killing. If it's a monster I take banner of eternal flame and an OB with Giant blade, and shield. This makes him 5 str 8 flaming attacks for anything regeneration (HPA, Hydra etc).

For unit killing I give +1 Movement banner and OB w/ Slaughter sword and maim shield. 9 str 5 attacks can give the unit the edge in taking on heavy infantry or light. Str 5 on the charge with an insane number of attacks means no armour save. Your enemy will die in droves.

Now I most definately will have to try them out. The skaven player I usually fight is very fond of his HPA, so I will most likely make a scar veteran tailored to dealing with it, and put him in the unit.

I'm just getting back into playing (8 year break ) 7th edition with some friends, and I was hoping to fit my favorite hero into this unit.

Inxi Huinzi has his fancy poison darts for charges, and his Horned One cancels stupidity?

I'm prepping for a 3 way free-for-all and I was thinking high maneuverability would be optimal for flanking an opponent engaged with another opponent?

If I fielded a unit of 7/8 CoC and Inxi (to negate stupidity and throw darts) with Huanchi's Blessed Totem for a potentially huuuge charge..

Seem like a plausible plan?

I don't think magical weapons can get flaming attacks due to them being...magical.
can't give a brb reference since I lent it to a friend.

Against regen monsters I just take a GW yeah sure I strike last but if my unit of CoC lives then the monster dies a gory death also the mundane GW gets the flaming attacks.

They can still be flaming if you have the BoEF in the unit. If your curious look at the hills special terrain. One of hte hills there (forget the name) gives any unit on the hill magical and flaming attacks.

Also, the great horned one doesn't negate stupidity, it's just immune to stupidity itself. So if your character was stand alone you'd be fine. However putting him in a unit subject to stupidity makes your character (and mount) subject as well for as long as he's with that unit.

Boo. All these new fancy rules are terrible. That was the only reason to play Inxi back in my day! In the book I have it specifically states that having him in a unit of cavalry makes the others not need to taste blood before they are no longer stupid.. because he's crazy angry (or something).

Now I wish I hadn't repainted him, stupid cavalry is too risky for my tastes.

Well look on the bright side though, at least he doesn't come out of your magic alotment. He now only costs as a mount. So at least you have that going for you.

Would CoC be more effective than a steggers against WoC?

I was planning on going shadow slann, so the steed of shadows on a scar-vet in the unit would be cool, but a steggers charge is pretty hurtful..

Both are good canidates for CM. But if I were to pick I'd go with an ancient instead of a regular and I'd put a chief on him with the war spear. You'll need all those impact hits at Str 6 before his warriors start hacking away. But when you look at it the only thing CoC bring over a Steg is more attacks but likely fewer wounds since they are only str 5 on the charge. Your Steg has 2D6+1 Impact, Chief = 3, Crew = 3, Steg = 3, D6 Thunderstomp. That's 10+3D6 possible wounds. Average CoC without a character is only around 25 which includes Cold Ones (that's with 12 models!). That also means that all your guys survived being hit first though.

Personally if I were going against Chaos I'd take a Skink Chief w/ War Spear on Ancient, a 2nd Ancient plus my OB w/ Slaughter blade, Maim shield on Carno. Then I'd charge every single one of those units into a SINGLE CW unit.
