7th Ed. Cloak of Feathers

I am just starting my army. I have enough lizardmen to field a 750 pt army (doing a campaign that gradually increases every two weeks). I have:

2 skink priests

16 Saurus Warriors

20 skink skirmishers

10 chameleon skinks

my 500pt army was/is

1 skink priest (upgraded to lvl 2)
Staff of lost suns

14 saurus warriors (with standard and musician)

12 skink skirmishers

6 chameleons

My 750 pt army will use all the models at the top of the page.

My question: is it worth it to get the Cloak of Feathers?

What else could I do to better my odds? (I have lost 1 and tied another-and then lost another game outside the campaign-with the 500pt army)

I'd say that on a Skink Priest, its not really worth it. Any missile spell you can get only requires LoS, so range is irrelevant. There's no way the Priest should be anyplace where he may be in danger of getting into combat. Possibly, if you need to cast one of the support spells, but even then, I tend to hide them behind a block of Saurus.

One of my personal favorite tricks is the Blood Statuette of Spite. Works wonders against low toughness armies. Just make sure to get your opponent to drain his dispel dice and use up any scrolls. May take a turn or two, but totally worth it to see a Lokir Fellheart die a slow, painful death.

Upgrade both skinks to level 2, take Rod of the Storm and Cloak of Fethers on one and make him the general, this way he should never ever ever die except to stuff like anvils or warpath / foot of gork spells, and thus never giving up his +100 VPs for killing general. The other priest should have Plaque of Tepoc and either a Power Stone or the Statuette. This way you have 6 PDs so you can 3-dice one spell each with the skinks (just pray you get a useful spell on both of them), and you'll have 2 one-use-only surprise items to do some extra damage when you need it (drain dispel dice and scrolls in the first turns ofc).

Make sure you play your cammos in 2x5, its much more effecient than a giant unit of 10. Other than that the list looks pretty okay, a Cold One Scar-vet BSB should be on the top of the priority list for 1000 pts tho, and some terradons wouldn't hurt (well technically they would hurt the opponent....).

I actually was leaning toward a scar vet on a horned one (I do not llike the idea of stupidity checks) and some terradons.

I was thinking that I could take the skink with cloak of feathers and fly him behind the enemy and blast them from there.

stupidity on Ld 8 cold blooded only fails when it really matters [i.e. important flank charge for COC unit, lone scar vet charging a fleeing mage that knows spirit of the forge, etc], i wouldn't worry about it. the horned one just isn't worth is cost. i suggest getting a scar vet as the general honestly, LD 8 > LD 6 even if cold blooded

its not my intention to hijack this topic but what is he point of a BSB in a LM army? we don't have any great magic banners and rerolled failed break tests will rarely mater to explain the 25 pts for the upgrade and the possibility of an additional -100 VP if he dies.

Actually it matters a lot! We already have an advantage in the Ld field, for an additional 25 pts you're making sure that you're making the most of that advantage!! I never leave home without a BSB in my Lizardmen army

Hehe, I'm new at this and could benefit from hearing both sides of that argument. I have fought a grand total of 3 battles ever, so any input I can get is good stuff.

For 25pts, you get, the reroll for breaks, but also +1 Combat resolution along with the option to add a magic banner if you so choose. I can definitely agree that the magic banners found in the LM arsenal are nothing to jump for joy over, although some of them have great situational uses. Not taking a BSB for the extra 25 points (especially in large games) seems a little strange considering that you recomend not using a skink and picking up a Scar vet. 8 vs. 6 does make a difference even with cold blood, but I can guaruntee you that you'll probably spend at least 25pts more, getting your SV ready for combat.

In smaller games, I usually run with no BSB because of the points and LM leadership is great on its own, but for larger games, where I have the space, picking up the +1CR is wonderfull for breaking that big enemy unit. The added bonus of the BT RR just means it's that much harder for the scalies to turn tail and run.

Sorry, but I had to play devils advocate for a second there.

I was thinking of using the cloak of feathers in a 500 pt game this week to battle some skaven. The other player will be bringing two units of infantry with a wizard/caster and attacking with those. What can I do to fight that with the following:

Skink Priest
upgraded to lvl2
staff of the lost sun
cloak of feathers (can I have both of these on the priest? I think it is over the allotted points for his magic items)

14 Saurus warriors

12 skinks

6 camo skinks

I played a 'friendly' game last week with that exact army and it was a massacre! The Rats blasted me away with the Warp lightning spell. I was not playing my army correctly either though (I did not use the skinks to screen my saurus).

the staff of the lost sun is quite worthless on a skink priest with BS 3. you'll probably be hitting on 6's most of the time since you will probably move and use multiple shot, and even after you hit you must still roll to wound, i suggest something else for those points. maybe a plaque of tepok or a didem of power for magic defense, even a dispell scroll would be better

I concur with Bibamus. Make a magic user better at magic. Make a combat user better at combat (IE SV). Using items to 'round out' a character seems not never pan out of me. Which is one of the reasons why the staff seems a bit uesless. I guess a chief on a stegadon wouldn't be bad, but most people opt for a priest on a stegadon.
