8th Ed. Chameleon Slann?

Currently I am playing in a restricted league and have only 350 points to spend on Lords. So that is 2 disciplines for the Slann and making him my BSB, or 1 discipline, BSB and Cupped Hands.

So I am looking for ways to better protect my Slann, any thoughts on running him in a large unit of Skink Skirmishers or Chameleons.

Harder to hit with shooting, -1 to hit the unit Skirmisher additional -1 if unit of Chameleons
If he grenades he is taking out fewer and cheaper models.
Would nullify the miscast of every model in base contact takes a S10 hit.
Better resistance to pit, dwellers, sun etc.
Down side is unit only moves as fast as Slann.

Where would the Slann be placed if attached to a SKROX unit?
 
Inconpatable base size units rank up on the left or right side of the unit.

Yeah I know I was just looking for someone to give me a way he could be put into a SKROX unit.

But I am more interested to know if anyone is using the Skirmished Skinks as a vehicle for their Slann and how it is working out for them.

Regardless of him having to go on the outside of the unit he would still gain the benefits of being in a Skirmisher/Chameleon unit. Correct?
 
Well as a single base I believe he counts as a skirmisher,
but not being a chamelion he doesn't the the aditional -1 to hit.
and you Chamelions wouldn't be able to scout with him.

I know he would not be able to scout that is not the point of the unit. The idea is damage control, reducing the effectiveness of shooting against him and the effects of miscasts.

So would the entire unit lose the Chameleon special ability if he joins the unit?
 
Upon further investigation:

It is not directly addressed what happens when a character without the Chameleon rule joins a Chameleon Skink unit. But I think it falls into the same category as a Character on a mount without the Fast Cav rule joins a unit of Fast Cav, the entire unit loses the Fast Cav special rule until he leaves the unit.
 
I would probaly be the most effective to just put him in regular skirmishing skinks, cost wise.

Ps. you can give your Slann the Sun standard of Chotec, for -1 to hit from far away & -2 to hit within 1'.
 
In the rules describing the skrox unit, it mentions that a slann cannot join that unit along with kroxigors. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember seeing that rule.

Arli i think you are referring to the special character which can join a unit of skinks in the same way a slann joins the temple guards. in that special rule it states that no kroxigors is allowed in the unit he joins.
 
You are correct. It is in Tetto'etto's rule I think. I assumed it applies to the slann as well. It does not.
 
When I made the comment about joining the SKROX unit I was thinking that the Slann was on a 40mm, which he obviously is not, so it was a dumb suggestion on my part anyway. Since he is on a 50mm he would go to the outside.

I had not really thought that one all the way through but thanks for humoring me guys.
 
That would make a really good magic item for us though. Something that gives both scouting and the chameleon ability. I would pay 30 points for something like that for a chief.

Like the Dwarf Rune of Brotherhood (20 points if I remember correctly). It allows a Character to join a unit if Ranger Scouts or Miners! Pretty nasty to have a kitted out Thane show up in your backfield with 20 other S4 T4 guys swinging great weapons.
 
All Skinks are on 20mm
All Saurus are 25mm
Cold one Calvery are 25x50mm
Kroxigors, Salamanders, Razordons, jungle swarms, and Terradons are 40mm
All Slann are and Carnasaurs are 50mm
Stegadons are 50x100mm

compatable bases in like colors.
 
Y'know, I have saved a lot of money by buying my models on ebay and craigslist. The downside to that is that I have 6 chameleons on the 25mm bases (fully based and finished) and a slann on a 40mm base that is completed.

When I started the hobby, I had no idea that those models were on the wrong bases. No one that I play with has a problem with that.

Just making that observation.

My Slann was also on a 40mm, I just glued that ontop of a 50mm and matched the basing already on it.

That is the easy fix, as far as the Chameleons if you want them on the correct bases you going to have to snap them off, of course if Chameleons are in CC you got bigger problems. :P
 
I'm not terribly worried about the chameleons. Like you said, if they get into CC, there are other problems.
 
Why don't you just use the magic item giving him a 2+ ward save to shooting? It is 30 points, whereas at least 60 for a chameleon screen, which will not last long anyway, or 70 for a skink screen, again, one round of shooting will probably allow the slann to start getting hit.
 
I'm with caldt. If you aren't fielding TG just go with:

Slann, Focus Rumination, Plaque of Protection.

Right there you are at 305 so you have 45 points to play w/ cupped hands, plaque of tepok, BSB, etc.
