so for this escalation league I was tempted when I get to 2k to have my lord be an old blood on a carnosaur.

Are they any good in 8th and any recommended general build? and should I stick him in a team of cold blood riders or let him roam free?

Go massed number of attacks, Slaughter blade (+3 attacks) and maim shield.

Or

Go lots of anti-armour, Giant Blade with any variety of equipment (maim shield, potion o' strength etc)

Let him roam free. He's 14" march so I like him on a flank to deal with stray units or shut down a flanking force and get into his sides and back lines. He's a bigger base size than cold ones so he can be targeted out of the unit in shooting anyways so he's better spread out.

Carnosaurs are just nasty. Always have liked them. Though I'm not to sure about the placement into the Cold Ones though. Like JohnMavrick said, he is better suited to be a flanker/flank blocker. But is down to you. I'd like to see how a OB with Carnie mount would go in a squad of Cold Ones.

the Carnie is a monstorous mount which I believe means he can not be placed in units.

please correct me if I am wrong

As for using them in 8th.... still have not used one, but I am really thinking of it.

I would give Armor of Destiny, GW and -1 to be hit

That's right, page 105 of the main rulebook- characters riding monsters may not join units. Too bad; I liked running him with some cavalry in 7th.

Here's a build I've been having luck with for the carnosaur rider:

Great Weapon
Armor of Destiny
Dawn Stone
Other Trickster's Shard (or Carnosaur Pendant; or Firefly Venom)

For another attack, I prefer the Carnosaur Pendant over the Maim Shield- the shield's extra attack only hits at your base strength, but when frenzy activates you get the strength bonus from your weapon. Venom is mainly for getting ethereal guys, but poison never hurts either.

I like the trickster's shard best, as it improves the chances of the carnosaur attacks getting through as well. Great against Phoenix Guard and demons!

The rider has a 4+ ward and 1+ re-rollable armor (2+ if the mount dies). The carnosaur falls long before the rider does, and keeping it alive has been my main challenge.

Hmm... maybe if I took less defensive gear, the opponent would spread out the attacks a little more...

Nah, I think he'd just take you down easier. If I saw that you took less defenses I'd probably target you more so initially so that you went down fast and I didn't have to deal with your Carno/OB in the middle and later half of the game.

Good point JohnMavrick, and one that was just now proven in a game. My Elf opponent was so worried about not being able to kill the rider, he went far out of his way to avoid engaging the carnosaur at all. It allowed me to herd some of his units around and get some good double charges with other models.

Such are the effects of mental warfare.

You could field a couple of regular stegs as moble cover for your old blood/carnie..?

I've ran nothing but the OB/Carnie combo for the duration of 8th edition so far. The Slann is not really my style of play, even though it's very effective. For my army, I have 2 ancient stegadons, one crewed by normal skinks and the other a skink chief with war spear. Having 3 big dinos really makes the opponent think about which one they want to target. And T6 on the Stegs is hard for anybody to overcome. Along with a couple block units of Saurus I've had very good success. Needless to say, magic heavy armies give me fits but if I'm able to make it to their line I usually have good results. I've always kept the OB on the flanks and try to get him and a unit of Saurus to charge at the same time. It works for me, but like I said, the OB/Carnie is my style of play versus the magic heavy Slann list. Just my 2 cents...

Iggy what does you list look like? I am thinking of geting away from the slann for a few games

Well, we usually run 2,500 point games so my list may be slightly different than what you're used to. To sum it up though:

OB/Carnosaur

SV as BSB

Skink Chief on Ancient Steg

Skink Priest

30 Saurus

30 Saurus

10 Skinks

10 Skinks

2 Salamanders

8 Chameleons

Ancient Steg

I know it's not detailed but you get the general idea. If you're playing 2,250 points I have opted to drop all of the skinks (even the Chamos) and I'll still be pretty competitive. Let me know your thoughts.

Iggy

Looks like a pretty decent list but I'd not get rid of your Chameleons. I understand if you want to run an all Saurus army but bear in mind that unless you want to get rid of your Stegs and Salamanders and priest you can't do away completely with skinks so you might as well keep those awesome anti- warmachine/character units! LoL

Otherwise I think you've got a nice strong list, looks very similar to what I run in my non-slann list except I usually run a unit of CoC for flank crack troops.
