7th Ed. BSB and Magic Items

Can a BSB take magic items other than a magic standard? I could almost swear that in both 6th and 7th edition rule books it says specifically "may take no other magic items" if a hero is your BSB but I see a lot of lists where folks have some on their BSB.

I have been playing where you can't take magic items but a BSB would be much more appealing if they could.

The BSB can take magic items. But if he has a magic banner then he cannot

But if you have a Slann carrying the BSB then he CAN take both a magic banner and other magic items.

It is simply because he is just to cool for school.
