8th Ed. Beginner 2000p list

I'm a beginner and need some help with what to use in my list. I will mostly face a friend who plays WoC with lots of knights/warriors. Any tips about that are welcome. Basically i will rely heavily on magic and stegadons.

So heres what i would enjoy playing alot, and i hope the units are useful in the battle. Share any thoughts about changes and what units i should use to maximize my win propability. My core is a bit small i think, thoughts on that are especially appriciated.

Lords:
Slann mage priest, 2x desciplines. Mystery & rumination.

Heroes:
Saurus scar veteran, halberd, light armour, shield and sword of the hornet.
Skink priest.

Core:
18x Saurus warriors with spears, champion and standard bearer.
18x Saurus warriors wtih spears, champion and standard bearer.
12x Skink skirmishers with a brave.

Special:
10x Temple guard, revered guardian and standard bearer.
1x Stegadon.

Rare:
1x Ancient stegadon with stegadon war-spear.
2x Salamander hunting packs.

No magic items? maybe give him cupped hands

Heroes:
Saurus scar veteran, halberd, light armour, shield and sword of the hornet.

Give him a great weapon LA enchanted Shield (BRB)

Skink priest.

Dispell scroll

Core:
18x Saurus warriors with spears, champion and standard bearer.
18x Saurus warriors wtih spears, champion and standard bearer.

Units of 20

12x Skink skirmishers with a brave.

Unit of 10 and you probably need another one and no brave

Special:
10x Temple guard, revered guardian and standard bearer.

This needs to be a unit of 16

1x Stegadon.

Bye Bye steg

Rare:
1x Ancient stegadon with stegadon war-spear.

You need a chief so change that to engine of the gods

2x Salamander hunting packs.

Good

Then add this up and remove anything else that you need to remove

Thanks for the feedback, this thread was created so long ago so i have added and removed some stuff along the way . The scar vet gearing you proposed is great, thought about it this week and will probably mount him on a cold one as well. In our armybook the enchanted shield is described as an armour, can you wear it and count the save and swing a great weap along with it?

The saurus blocks are a bit small yeah, but i need to cut back on spending with those to fit my beloved 2 stegadons in the army. I found out after some games that temple guards rock btw! The army will basically consist of a powerful Slann/TG block and 2 saurus blocks each supported by a stegadon, a speedbumb of skinks and 2 separate salamanders.

Slann mage priest 2x disciplines (mystery & rumination), razor standard (armor piercing). Battle standard bearer. Cupped hands of the old ones

I will use the slann with his temple guard to crush my friends unit of dual wielding chaos warriors. They have Festus in the formation every single time for the poison attacks and regeneration. So armor piercing s 5 flaming attacks will WTFPWN his chaos armor and regeneration. Hopefully! Mohaha
